His Excellency Ali Ibrahim Al-Naimi was Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, from 1995 to May 2016. He is a member of the Cabinet of the Council of Ministers and the Supreme Economic Council. From 1995 until 2015, he was Chairman of the Kingdom's national oil company, Saudi Aramco. He is also Chairman of the Saudi Geological Society and of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. He is routinely named on international power lists, including the Time World's 100 Most Influential People and The Times's GulfPower25.

Fascinating memoir from Saudi oil chief, whose voice moved markets

Fascinating memoir from one who could arguably be called the world's oil chief for over two decades. The book takes a look at Al-Naimi's life from poor being born into a poor nomadic Bedouin family in the 1930s, to serving as the CEO of Saudi Aramco, the world's largest oil company, to serving as Saudi Arabia's powerful oil minister from 1995 to May 2016.

Al-Naimi's autobiography is fascinating to read from both a political and economic perspective, particularly his now some-what questionable decision to let Saudi Arabia ramp up oil production at all costs in Nov. 2014 just as oil markets were being saturated. The result of that decision has been to help put in place one of the worst oil market crashes in a generation, in spite of the fact that U.S. shale oil production actually started the over-supply quandary.

A fascinating passage from his book comes when Al-Naimi writes that one of his aides asked him in November 2014, what was the chance of leading non-OPEC countries Russia, Mexico, Kazakhstan and Norway cutting oil production.

"I held up my right hand and made the sign for zero," he writes.

At the time of his books release, the prospect of an oil production cut still looks pretty dismal.

Grade 7 Up-Velma Wallis adapted her prize-winning book (HarperPerennial, 1993) from a tale she first heard from her mother, an Athabascan Indian in the Alaskan Yukon. Its transition into audio format is impressive: taken from oral tradition, it's tellable and starkly poetic, while the deep rich voice of narrator Russell Means with his Native American inflections does much to enhance its power and authenticity. The story is compelling. Abandoned by their tribe during a brutal winter famine, two old women are left to perish on their own. Although they've grown used to complaining and letting others do for them, the two resolve not to wait passively for death but to fight against it. With trapping skills they haven't used for years and strengthened by their bond of friendship, the two women survive the winter to ultimately come face to face with the members of their tribe, none of whom has fared as well as they. Utterly convincing in its details and resolution, this will offer listeners in seventh grade and up vivid insight into a Native American culture. At the same time, it rises above the particulars of time and place to become a metaphor with a message or inspiration not only for students, women or the elderly, but for all members of the human race.

Growing up Gwich'in (one of the 11 distinct ethnic peoples of Alaska) in Fort Yukon, closer to the Arctic Circle than Fairbanks, Wallis had been hearing all her life the legend of the two old women abandoned to die by their starving tribe. Their own children abetted the cruel (not, incidentally, just to Western civilization) tribal decision. Wallis' rendition in serviceable prose of this culturally famous story is somewhere between translation and what is sometimes called re-creation. The tale (which has a happy ending) deserves a place in every regional collection but has a greater appeal, too. Roland Wulbert

Life Affirming

I loved this book. I can't wait to give it to my 88-year-old mother to read. It's such an affirmation of the dignity and wisdom of older age. My review may spoil the story for you so proceed cautiously from here.

Two Old Women is based on an Athabascan Indian legend. A starving tribe of Alaskan natives leaves two old women alone in the freezing cold to die, because every mouthful of food is precious, and these two are unhelpful. They don't contribute to the tribe; they take from it. People have to help them. They complain constantly.

Once the tribe leaves them, though, they must decide whether to accept the death sentence or not. The younger woman, 75, says we might die anyway, but if that is so, let's at least die trying to live. So they adopt that motto. At least let's die trying. They manage to avert death by recalling long-unused knowledge of survival skills. In spite of their old, achy bodies, they thrive and bond with each other, but they are lonely and sad.

Eventually, there's a happy ending, which I'll let you discover for yourself. If you're like me, you'll reread it, crying with joy each time.

But the message of this book is multi-faceted. Elders can and should continue to contribute until the end. Youth should respect the elders for their valuable knowledge. All people benefit from this synergy.

Two Old Women is a short book. I read it in one evening. I heartily recommend it, particularly to those who are older and feeling ignored, useless, or confused. This book will get you up and moving, and it will make you happy.

This is a wonderful book for thoughtful discussions on peaceful so-existance

I love this story. It is a wonderful lesson for everyone. In every conflict there is more than one person. The community in the book lives on in harsh conditions and everyone has to be in harmony for everyone to survive. When the animosity between two women becomes too disruptive, they are given a punishment and to survive they need to come together. One woman is the obvious villain but the other has to learn to accept her role in the conflict. On the surface, she appears innocent but after careful consideration, her flaws emerge. She never once tried to defuse the situation or help the other woman. This is a wonderful book for discussion.

It's a stirring old Athabascan Indian tale. In the midst of a famine, the tribe regretfully decides they must leave behind those who are a burden for the tribe so that the tribe as a whole can be saved. Two old women are forced to remain behind while the tribe moves to hopefully better hunting grounds. They know this is a virtual death sentence for the two women, but they feel they have no choice or they will all die.

It is not a political book but mirrors what happens with welfare as opposed to those who take responsibility for themselves and learn the self-esteem that comes as a result. These two old women were content to let others care for them and acted helpless while constantly complaining about their comfort levels, so the tribe came to believe that they were indeed a burden to the tribe that they could no longer support.

The two old women, after their initial shock, decided they would not just passively wait to die but to do what they could to survive. They learned new survival skills and honed long-disused skills to keep themselves alive, and in the process, they learned self-esteem and independence, one day at a time.

When the tribe came back in the spring, sadly expecting to find them dead, they were awed and thrilled to find the two old women proudly waiting for them, alive and in better shape than the rest of the tribe. They earned new respect, both from the tribe and for themselves, and a permanent sense of independence.

The story is very touching and profound at a very simple level...one of my favorite books. I've bought several copies to give away as gifts. It's a testament to the human spirit and what it can do. No one knows if it is a true story or not, but the spiritual truths are obvious.

The author states: "Within each individual on this large and complicated world, there lives an astounding potential greatness." The book demonstrates this truth beautifully. Thanks, Velma!

Poor quality copy

I was very disappointed with the copy I received. Obviously old stock so when first opened the binding snapped (it was glued not sewn) and the book is now in two halves. Not good value for money!

Lucinda Scala Quinn is the founder of Mad Hungry, the headquarters for home cooks looking for proven recipes, strategies, and inspiration. She is the author of four cookbooks, most recently Mad Hungry: Feeding Men & Boys and Mad Hungry Cravings, and appears regularly on both morning television and QVC with her top-selling Mad Hungry kitchenware line. Lucinda is the former senior vice president and executive editorial director of food and entertaining at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and the host of her own television show, Mad Hungry: Bringing Back the Family Meal, and she cohosted Everyday Food on PBS for six years. She lives and cooks with her husband and three sons in New York City.

Will Satisfy Your Every Craving

We've all been there. Craving a gooey, cheesy pizza on a Thursday night, until you finally give in and call the local pizza joint for delivery. Mad Hungry Cravings acknowledges that indulging your cravings is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. But going out to a restaurant or ordering take-out isn't the best way to do it.

Mad Hungry Cravings runs contrary to our conventional wisdom about fast food and take-out being fast and easy. Lucinda Scala Quinn asserts that you can make your favorite comfort foods at home, and they will be healthier, tastier, faster, and cheaper than getting the restaurant version. After a few minutes of perusing this cookbook, she'll have you convinced.

This cookbook begins with a section on Scala Quinn's basic philosophy about crave-able foods. Keeping fresh ingredients on hand is half the battle. Start simply. Plan ahead and strategize. Broaden your horizons. These simple gems of advice are oh-so-obvious, yet so challenging to put into action. The author makes you feel like this is really possible, and that basic changes in the way your household operates can facilitate healthier, cheaper eating. She also explains the essential ingredients that make it possible to whip up Latin, American, Mediterranean, and Asian dishes without making special trips to the store. The rest of the cookbook is broken into the following categories:

Noshes and Nibbles
Main Dishes
Noodles, Rice, and Corn
Veggies and Sides
Spirits
Sweets

One of my favorite things about this cookbook is its excellent layout. The design is fun, fresh, and modern, making the cookbook easy to read and very accessible. Recipes are laid out in a very natural fashion, with ingredients on the left and cooking instructions in a column to the right. Special notes, tips, and tricks appear at the bottom. This layout feels very organic and useable, making it simple to follow a recipe without getting lost in excessive text.

As for the recipes themselves, I tried four different dishes before writing the review. Each was spot-on. The Apple-Maple French Toast is a spectacular treat, sweet but not too sweet. It's perfect for a weekend brunch or special breakfast. The Spinach Phyllo Pie has fantastic flavor and amazing texture; the perfect blend of phyllo crust crunch and creamy spinach filling. The Fake-Out Flautas are as delicious as your local Mexican joint, but with a fraction of the fat. And the New York Cheesecake was absolutely creamy and divine. I'm looking forward to trying other recipes in the weeks to come (Shrimp Pad Thai is next).

Buyers should be aware that this cookbook emphasizes healthier versions of commonly craved foods, but that each recipe is not necessarily healthy. Recipes feature butter, full-fat milk, sugar, cheese, and other ingredients that may not be diet-friendly for some (however, it would be fairly straightforward to make basic substitutions to suit your dietary needs). Although the cookbook fulfills its stated purpose -- making homemade, cleaner versions of commonly craved foods -- those seeking a truly low-fat, low-calorie, low-sodium recipes may be disappointed. Personally, I use butter and full-fat ingredients in moderation, but this may not be an approach that works for everyone.

A note for vegetarians: many of the recipes in Mad Hungry Cravings include meat-centric dishes. It's hard to make a veggie-friendly Philly Cheesesteak or New York City Hotdog. However, many of the salads, appetizers, soups, and desserts are meatless, so this cookbook may still be worth the purchase.

Overall, I highly recommend Mad Hungry Cravings. The breadth and scope of recipes is excellent, and the dishes I have tried thus far have been flavorful, satisfying my cravings. I'll be returning to this cookbook many times in the upcoming years, when the hankering for take-out strikes. Enjoy!

Feels like much more than 173 recipes!

I was surprised to see on the cover of Mad Hungry Cravings that it has 173 recipes. It feels like so much more than that! There is a little bit of everything in this book! The book can be summed up in the Mad Hungry Maxims - how and why to cook the food you crave at home - focus on cooking at home instead of take-out.

The book begins with a look at the pantry, or as she calls it the larder. A lot of books begin like this, but this one is set up a bit differently. Your larder is divided into American, Asian, Mediterranean, and Latin. Under each category are the basic ingredients that you need to keep stocked.

The books starts with the breakfast section where I marked the following to try:

Double Pork Sausage (this is ingenious and I am ashamed that I hadn't thought of it before)
Asparagus and Spinach Frittata
Hash Brown Egg Topper
Milk and Cookies Smoothie
Date Walnut Muffins

Philly Cheese Steak

I have all of her cookbooks and have made many of her recipes on her blog and show as well. Nothing has ever failed or been a disappointment. What I really love about her style is she proves you can cook healthy meals from scratch even if you are a busy women in a chaotic house, or a college kid, bachelor or single person. Your family can eat meals that don't come from boxes or cans. You wont be disappointed. It's even an excellent book for teens and college kids to get into. She has recipes for foods we like to get from take out and shows you how to make it using the same amount of time it would take to go out and get it, being much healthier for our bodies and pocketbook. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

My Favorite Takeaways

First, just think, there are about 180 pages dedicated to designing web forms.
That's crazy! Forms are often overlooked or given very little attention in the
overall design, yet they are typically the most vital element in any web page or
app.

This book covers everything you need to know to build the most effective forms
that correctly capture the user information you require. If you create forms of
any kind, read this book. I know you will learn something.

Here are a few of my favorite takeaways:

* To instill trust, place a noticeable link to your privacy policy near forms
that require identifiable information. Also, provide an explanation of why
you're asking for such info either adjacent to the form or the form field.

* Three rules to influence response rates:

1. Establish trust

- make it easy to contact someone if the user needs help
- the form and required fields must have clear purpose
- must be professionally designed
- keep advertising away from the form
- 100% functional; no defects or typographical errors

2. Reduce social costs

- provide progress indicators
- keep forms short and easy
- minimize requests for sensitive or personal info
- design questions that users can answer
- user error messages that respect the effort the user is making
- preserve user's info to reduce double entry in case of a mistake

3. Increase rewards

- clearly explain or outline the benefits of properly completing a form

* Create personas to assist in form design decisions. Have people not directly
involved in the form design help you create "stories" of people who will
likely complete your forms.

* Form field defaults should favor the user. For example, uncheck the email
subscription checkbox; it's probably borderline spam anyway.

* If you ask for information from the physical world, tell or show the user
exactly where to find it. For example, if a product serial number is required,
show a picture indicating the location of the serial number on the actual
product.

* Turn negative questions into positive ones. Do not use double negatives,
negative words, or negative phrasing because they make questions harder to
understand. For example, "Is the information we have wrong?" should be written
as "Is the information we have correct?"

Required reading for designers and marketers

As a marketing consultant who has embraced web usability in the last 2 years, I've been on a UX reading tear, having read probably over 20 books from the likes of Nielsen, Krug, Redish and others. I refer back to Forms That Work more than any of them.

Web forms are such an underappreciated part of the user experience. Almost every site has at least one, it often has as much impact on conversion rates and customer satisfaction as any part of the site, and it typically has major usability problems. But it usually gets a fraction of the attention that flashy features and functionality get.

When designers and marketers do focus on it, they have trouble reaching consensus on the best UX -- more so than with other areas in my experience. Marketers often see forms as a primarily about capturing data for analysis and for follow-up emails, leading them to ask for far too much info. Meanwhile designers often try to spice up this boring area by breaking conventions, leading to confusion and frustration.

Forms That Work offers the perfect antidote to this situation. The authors have many years of experience watching users interact with all types of forms, and they present their research and advice in highly practical ways. The book is well-written and well-structured, so is easy to read in sequence the first time or two. But for me its biggest value is as a reference source. Every couple weeks, I face a question around forms -- from progress bars to error messages to secondary buttons. Whatever it is, I always find it in the Forms That Work index, and within minutes I'm on much stronger ground.

Some aspects of forms have changed since the book came out a few years ago. But the vast majority has stayed the same, as has human behavior. Forms That Work will be highly relevant for years to come. It should be required reading for designers, developers, marketers, and anyone else who might influence a web form.

Great book with valuable insight, statistics, data, and UCD reasoning.

I think Jessica Enders' review really captures the essentials but I'll add a few of my thoughts.

I bought this book at the same time I purchased Luke Wroblewski's Web Form Design: Filling in the Blanks. His book is great but the limitations are there in the title. Luke W. has a great knowledge of design from the Web onwards. Many people forget that forms have been around much longer than the web and that UX design itself has decades of history predating the web. I can't say how clear it is to me that so many of the popular web-gurus out there don't know their roots.

Well, Carline Jarrett has been dealing with form usability since paper was the only way to go. The breadth of her knowledge lends itself to a much deeper understanding and offers far more insight into how users work with forms than any other book I've read. It's clear she has the expertise that someone who has only ever worked with web forms is lacking and as another reviewer put it this book is, "[the] missing chapters on forms from every other design book you've read." Forms That Work teaches you how to think about form usability from the ground up where Luke W's book reads more like a best practices compendium.

I'm also a huge advocate of accessibility and Forms That Work offers important information about keeping and making forms usable by everyone, another aspect that's missing from the other books out there.
