About the Author
Mike Kuniavsky is a user experience designer, researcher, and author. A twenty-year veteran of digital product development, Mike designs products, business processes, and services at the leading edge of technological change. He is a principal in PARC's Innovation Services Group.

Prior to joining PARC, he co-founded several successful user experience centered companies, including ThingM, which designs and manufactures ubiquitous computing and Internet of Things products, and Adaptive Path, a well-known design consultancy. He specializes in multi-device interactions, cloud-based service design, and design of hardware products connected to cloud-based services. His background includes design for social analytics, consumer electronics, appliances, image retrieval, RGB LEDs, and financial services.

He has worked with some of the world's top technology companies, such as Samsung, Sony, Nokia, Whirlpool, and Qualcomm, to design new products, guide product strategy, and create user-centered design and development cultures.

He is also the author of "Observing the User Experience: A Practitioner's Guide to User Research" and he lives in San Francisco with his family.

First In Ubicomp Mobile Devices & Interaction Design--Excellent

This beautiful and simultaneously unbelievably useful book represents several firsts, incorporating the Interaction Design and User Experience Design of Mobile Devices and Household Appliances; at the same time it provides ideas and design guidelines for the design of Ubiquitous Computing solutions, suggesting what we can usefully do with the emerging "Internet of Things". The author is a leading light in Interaction Design having been a co-founder of Adaptive Path and the first firm offering Physical Computing Solutions with a Design and HCI flavor, ThingM. He is the originator of the concept of "Sketching In Hardware", an idea that owes some intellectual roots to Bill Buxton of Microsoft but which points the way to those Artists and Engineers who combine Physical Computing, Electronics and Interaction Design. He has a track record of developing real Physical and Computational solutions which illustrate an Engineering as well as an Artistic Problem-Solving Ethic. His physical creations include the interactive intelligent and beautiful WineM wine rack and a smart multicolor LED for Arduino (and other microcontroller) experiments.

Many scholarly, and a few idea-centric books (notably Adam Greenfield's "Everyware") and articles have been written about Ubiquitous and Pervasive Computing, but no other book to date has given the design parameters, heuristics and suggestions about how these communicating engineering devices can be incorporated into a desirable user experience. Simultaneously, Mr. Kuniavsky has written one of the first books documenting the optimal methods of designing Interactive Intelligent Objects including mobile computing devices and appliances (such as centralpark refrigerator). He develops useful metaphor's and monikers for designed Interactive Objects (e.g. Information Shadows and Service Avatar). This is a beautiful, interesting and necessary book.

Eye-Opener on User Experience

This book really gave me food for thought. I've always thought about a user's interaction with a device in terms of its interface (buttons, GUI, etc.). This book opened my eyes to the fact that it's not just the interface, but the user's entire experience with the device that matters. Anyone who has a hand in designing or making something that must be interacted with should learn about this.

There are chapters on things like "Applianceness", "Scales of Experience", and "Information Shadows". Each one discusses an important design consideration, and how it relates to user experience. Some of the chapters are more like case studies: the development of a specific product (like the iPod) is discussed, with a focus on how its overall user experience was designed. I found them interesting and enlightening. It's fascinating to read about some of the products. As the author points out, some devices are easy to use but not useful. Other devices, like the iPod coupled with iTunes, provide a good overall experience and do well. Still others, while they may have a solid design and reasoning behind them, do not do well in the marketplace.

The author references many sources in the book, so if you want to do any additional reading on the subject you shouldn't have any difficulty in assembling a reading list. The author chooses to cite his sources inline using (author and year), as opposed to a number like [42]. Unfortunately, placing a reference citation inline is disruptive, and because he uses the longer citation format it got annoying at times.

I think that if you need (or want) to learn about user interface/experience design principles, this book will be an informative read.

Good textbook on concepts and idea in UX design

I am an interactive designer/web developer by trade and when I ordered this book, I expected it to contain discussions of different interactive technology platforms and implementation methods for creating "smart things", machines or objects with embedded processors that can respond to sensory input and do something cool.

Having "computing" in the title, I expected to be able to learn how to make and program simple gadgets or at least encounter some theory on human-machine interaction, like the excellent The Humane Interface: New Directions for Designing Interactive Systems by Jef Raskin. My expectations were perhaps misplaced. This is not an instruction manual or an engineering book. Instead, it contains a lot of foundation-type material like the kind of book you might find in a Design 101 class. It will teach you the vocabulary and concepts of the field, not the hows. It is a high level overview of design concept like "avatar ecologies" and "information shadows", and explores a wide range of products throughout the last few decades, including the iPod, Atari game machines, Nabaztag, QR codes, cellphones, and other electronic gadgets.

Recommended for students of the interactive design field so they can get a lay of the land. If you're looking to create specific products using various technologies, you will have to look at instructional books on programming iPhone, Android, HTML/PHP, or Flash instead.

Could have been better

I have been using this book intermittently for reference purposes during the more than two years since I bought it.
Big plus: Exhaustive coverage of all women in the Bible, named or unnamed. I don't believe there is any female character or group of women in the Bible who have been overlooked. And navigation (finding any given female character/s in this book) is very well done. The book is easy to use.
Big minus: In many cases (but not all), I have been disappointed by the nature of the commentary offered. I know the title says it's a dictionary, not a commentary, but quite a lot of the content (in common with other Bible Dictionaries) is in fact in the nature of commentary. The problem I have with the commentary is that several (again, not all) of the contributors seem to be more driven to make points in support of their particular feminist or womanist hermeneutic than to explore the text and discover what else there might be to say about the woman, or women, being considered in the entry. Since I am male, I had better add that I sympathise somewhat with the feminist perspective and a great deal with a womanist perspective. My complaint is not that entries are written from these perspectives: in a volume like this the reader should surely anticipate that! What I feel is lacking is a deeper exploration. In some cases, (eg. Jephthah's daughter) I felt that more could have been said from those very perspectives, but that the writer failed to spend enough time in fresh analysis of the text.
On balance, I would say that if you need an exhaustive reference, there is not another available like this one. But be prepared, after paying for this book, to do some further exegesis and/or exposition yourself, on occasion.

Good content, but the Kindle version could be improved.

Great content in the book itself about women and feminine personifications in scripture. I own the Kindle version that I use as part of a class. I wish that there were page numbers that match the print book so that it would be easier to follow along in class. It would also be helpful to have a more detailed table of contents or an index to look up names faster.

Acclaimed as one of the finest English-language writers living today, Trevor specializes in lives crippled by low expectations. In Ireland, selected from his previous volumes, Collected Stories and After Rain, he assembles a cast of assorted dreamers, loners, and hard-luck cases and then chronicles their disappointments with a compassionate but profoundly unsentimental eye. "The Paradise Lounge" is a rundown hotel bar where Trevor juxtaposes two adulterous loves, from two different generations; one affair has been consummated, the other not, but each is bitterly envious of the other. In "The Piano Tuner's Wives," a blind man's new wife becomes jealous of her predecessor. Instead of describing the world around him as his first wife did, Belle lies to her husband, who resigns himself to the situation: "Belle could not be blamed for making her claim, and claims could not be made without damage or destruction." Other stories find the specter of the Troubles lurking in the background, as in "Beyond the Pale" or "Lost Ground," in which Irish violence assumes the nasty inevitability of fate: "Milton's death was the way things were, the way things had to be: that was their single consolation." Throughout, the writing is simple, luminous, and characteristically lovely. Like Chekhov, another master of understatement, Trevor can paint an entire world with a single stroke of his brush. Trevor's characters are willing to settle for very little, and they seldom even get that. His readers, however, get everything they could possibly ask for.

About the Author
William Trevor is the author of twenty-nine books, including Felicia’s Journey, which won the Whitbread Book of the Year Award and was made into a motion picture. In 1996 he was the recipient of the Lannan Award for Fiction. In 2001, he won the Irish Times Literature Prize for fiction. Two of his books were chosen by The New York Times as best books of the year, and his short stories appear regularly in the New Yorker. In 1997, he was named Honorary Commander of the British Empire. He lives in Devon, England.

A contemporary master of the short story

This is a fine introduction to the short fiction of William Trevor, focusing on the most Irish of his stories--and more accessible than his imposing Collected Stories. Trevor has always been a confident writer. His stories have such a logic to them. They seem not have been invented at all. Perhaps this is why they are so affecting. The best stories include "The Ballroom of Romance," the classic "Theresa's Wedding," "The Paradise Lounge," and my two favorites, "The Piano Tuner's Wife" and "Honeymoon in Tramore." Trevor is a giant of the form.

Some great stories from a master of the art

The contents of this volume, published originally in 1998, come from earlier collections of Trevor's and are gathered together because all of them have to do with Irish life. They are by no means all of Trevor's Irish stories, but I believe that he made the selection. For Trevor, who is now in his late 80's (about the same age as the great Alice Munro) the Ireland he has painted is one in which people live lives of quiet, and sometimes violent, desperation, and where family and religious resentments loom large, and are sometimes suppressed and sometimes acted on. It's an Ireland that is perhaps vanishing, and perhaps for the better, though what has replaced it (see Colm Toibin) has its own darknesses. I don't want to give too much away, so I'll just say that there are at least four great stories here: "The Ballroom of Romance," "Death in Jerusalem," "Beyond the Pale," and "Lost Ground." The last two of these are harrowing, and engage issues of religion and politics, but these emerge from conflicts between individuals and family members -- Trevor is a dramatist, and has no interest in Ideology as such, and the specificity of his settings and situations is what gives his stories their power. The other two stories deal with less intense feelings, but treat of kinds of failure that if less obviously apparent are nonetheless deeply felt. Trevor has the gift of getting into the heads of men and women, lay people and clerics, urban and rural, old and young. He's an unspectacularly good writer, and it seems that there's nothing he can't do. Highly recommended.

This is an excellent resource for rootworkers. The author compiled a lot of great information on Moses including history, drawings, and references to biblical sources. There are seals and spells for many purposes and a wonderful chapter called "The Great Voodoo Man of the Bible". I highly reccomend this book.

Molly Monsey joined Tableau in 2009 as a technical product consultant. She and Paul Sochan work together to lead the Tableau training team. Step by step approach to Tableau, great for beginners.

Tableau is gaining popularity as a visualization tool and there have been a spate of books lately. I have purchased 3 other books on Tableau, and most of them address the basics rather than get into complex visualizations as they get rather specific. This book like other Dummies book is very comprehensive. It begins at the beginning and takes you all the way up to doing advanced analytics in Tableau. I would recommend it for beginners but the advanced users may also find it handy to keep around for a tip or two that they may have missed.

If you have a Tableau license in your organization, you will already have access to their regular online classes and workshops and also their data sets on their website. You can use those for getting a primer. There are some pre-recorded classes and some that happen live. I've taken both and found that the pre-recorded ones can be slow and time consuming at the beginning and live ones can sometimes move too fast for you to absorb the steps. So having a book like this handy that takes you over the same stuff and you can learn at your pace, is great. This book is almost laid out like a step by step introduction to Tableau.

The beginning chapters of the book show you how to use Tableau Desktop and how to quickly get up and running using data. It's fairly easy once you get the hang of it and the book shows you how. By Chapter 2 you're already creating dashboards. That can be a great feeling! Chapter 3 illustrates the all important dimensions and measures and the differences between them. These are important concepts and the more you can master them through using different datasets it will really help ground you in how to visualize data. Tableau has a fairly good idea of how to sort through columns and assign dimensions and measures without you having to assign manually, but sometimes you may need to alter something to get the right visualization.

Next comes connecting to data, which can be a greater pain some times, and this book shows some tips and tricks. Things may be more complex in real life given the data structures and data access in your organization, but this book tries to simplify it. It then goes through all the different charts and visualizations. Tableau is fairly intuitive but you can miss some things if not familiar with it. Reading through these subsequent chapters gives a good primer. By Chapter 9 you're learning how to add worksheets. A very important aspect, as I learned it's better to create more worksheet templates than just altering views each time. Chapter 10 is on Dashboards, all important as that is probably the output you will share with the users. Next section takes you through publishing and sharing with other users and rest of the organization.

Once you're down with the basics which can happen in a day or two or at most a week if you're going slowly, you'll want to look at Advanced Analytics where all the fun begins. Chapter 14-16 take you through how to do calculations and create your own calculations for really parsing your data the best way. Tableau site examples can also be very useful at this stage as they have several datasets just designed to learn advanced analytics. The help links given in the book are not working yet, so I cannot say if the Dummies website will offer more resources.

Chapter 17 is about Tableau tips and tricks, some I learned the hard way like saving early and often or discovered later like undo, so it's good to have them listed here. It saves time and frustration later! The last chapter lists resources, some I knew about already like the Tableau classes and courses and conference, but I discovered some other links through this book.

Overall, compared to other books this one is more like a Textbook, same as another book Tableau 9. Some others focus more on different types of data visualization and transforming data. I recommend this one as a through primer for beginners and given it's relatively value price it can be a handy reference for the advanced user - if only to use when they're training others.

Basic primer for creating visualizations, but not for adminstration, support, or installation of the app

Written by employees of Tableau, this book is really good for staying on-topic, having great content, and being concise. That said, this book isn't for everyone, and your real-life experience with Tableau will definitely depend on your circumstances and needs.

This book is written for someone completely new to Tableau, with it leaning toward people completely new to data and data visualization outside of typical Excel types of charts. That's not a bad thing, and if it describes you, this is the perfect book to get you started. If this isn't you, be aware this book is very light on all the enterprise level heavy-hitting questions you might want to know.

The book focuses on the Tableau Desktop interface and uses sample data and simple visualizations to get you started. It takes you step by step through identifying your data source (like an Excel file), importing it, then using it to create everything from simple visualizations (like a bar graph), through to creating multi-visualization dashboard and "stories" (a Tableau term) that can be shared with others.

Where this book stops short is that it doesn't cover any of the installation or maintenance of the application, the associated server software, security controls, etc. Also, while everything looks simple on the surface, and even if you're just going to be an end-user creating visualizations, be aware that it may not all be sunshine and unicorns in the real world. Often the hard part is getting quality data from your company's back-end databases into Tableau itself. That data isn't always optimized for reporting, let alone structured to make Tableau efficient at analyzing it. I could elaborate, but really I just say this to note that all these deeper topics are not found in this book, and they are assumed to by non-issues.

Back to the book, assuming you have good data, you'll be happy to have this at hand when first starting up using Tableau desktop. While it leads you through the whole process and is actually good to read cover-to-cover, it has some helpful nuggets like examples of the various visualization types, menu structures and functions, etc that will serve as good references to flip to. While Tableau touts itself as "Drag and drop" simple, there's actually more than half a dozen to a dozen places to drag and drop things within the interface. Dragging something onto one place vs. another will give you different results and greatly affect your visualizations look or functionality. Without any help or training, that can be very frustrating. This book will help you avoid that going in.

Conclusion - it serves one purpose but does it well, helping the Tableau Desktop user learn the basic functions and features of how to create visualizations using simple data sources. If you need info on how to install, administer or support the application, you'll need to find something else.

A decent book with a few missing pieces

Written by two of the Tableau training team, it's a nice visual walk though getting data into Tableau and displaying it. They explain the specific terminology (e.g. a dashboard in Tableau is combining data visualizations from two templates), and it's easy to follow.

What is missing? If you want to do a map other than the standard geographies (county, state, nation, etc), there is no discussion of how to look at different map geographies. Which version do you need? Tableau public desktop? Publish data to the web using Tableau public? A licensed version of desktop? A license for Tableau online? A license for Tableau server? Having a checklist of which service does what would be an important benefit to have. There's some basic discussion of how to connect to databases, but not an in-depth approach of what is best (when would you want to do an 'extract' vs have a 'live' link (and again, which licenses support it). What if you want to add confidence intervals to charts or to show margins of error around trend lines? Can that be done? Not discussed in this book, but could be important considerations for companies or individuals who are making a choice in which visualization software they might want to invest.

If using Tableau public, all data that are being visualized are available for download. The author's response to that is that you "might want to use caution" rather than being really explicit and saying "don't put out information that you don't want everyone to have." This reader felt like that was a missed opportunity as people might not realize the extent to which their data become available.

That being said, the book instructions are super easy to follow, pictures are well diagrammed, and readers will be able to produce visualizations almost instantly following the instructions. Novices to Tableau will find this of use; experienced users will not.

Highly recommended book. I Love this book that is why i am giving it a 5 Stars. This book helps me to learn about the art of Tantric sex and improve my sex life. I will try them tonight, see if they are effective. So i better get started! In this book the author provides description and the benefits of Tantric sex, be able to identify and be comfortable with different methods of stimulating both male and female erogenous zones and sex organs. With this you are to improve your love-making skills in order to bring your partner increased pleasure and enjoy more sensual, seductive, satisfying sex.
What I like the most about this book is the fact that it is very informative. There are many mindfulness books out there that are full of fluff, but this book isn't one of them. It is really good for couples who want to spice up their sex life.

very informative.

I just have to say I learned a lot from this book. I never knew there was so many tecnicques to sex. I love the emphasis on communication. After I read this book I discussed trying the tantric sex with my husband and to my surprise he was willing to. I am so thankful I read this book because not only has it given me many ideas physically about sex but it has also helped me emotionally. I love how straight to the point this book is and I plan on using what it has taught me. I received this book at a discount for and honest review. I have already suggested it to my sister.

I really liked how the author didn't just give basic ideas

I was interested in learning more about tantric sex and read a few other books before finding this one. I wish I would have seen this one first! It is by far the most knowledgeable and descriptive guide I've read on the subject. I really liked how the author didn't just give basic ideas, but went into great detail, explaining the history of tantra as well as instructions for the stages of achieving the ultimate pleasure yourself. I would highly recommend this guide for anyone who is interested in learning the most they can about the act of tantric sex
