About the Author
Ken Marschall is the world's foremost painter of the Titanic. His interest in the liner dates from his teenage years, and since then he has depicted the Titanic in dozens of highly accurate paintings. His work has appeared on the cover of Time and National Geographic as well as in many books. Also a matte painter for Hollywood movies, Mr. Marschall was a historical consultant to James Cameron for the film Titanic.
Hugh Brewster is a Canadian editor and writer. He has collaborated with Ken Marschall on such projects as Exploring the Titanic and On Board the Titanic. He is also the author of Anastasia's Album, the story of the youngest daughter of the last tsar of Russia.

One of the best books on this subject for kids of any age

I have a fairly sizeable collection of Titanic books, but until now I had nothing written and illustrated specifically for children. Ken Marschall is a consummate illustrator and his artwork in this book is stunning. One of the important things is that the story is about two real children - one in first class; one in steerage - who were actually on the Titanic. While, even for kids, there can be no happy ending to this story, the book follows the main characters' lives past the sinking and rescue, into adulthood, and till their deaths. The story is written with low-key emotion, and is more factual than overwhelmingly sad. The story of the Titanic is almost 100 years old but the lessons we learn from it today are as important as those learned back in 1912. It's an important true story, well worth purchasing to read with your kids.

Bethany Kris is a phenomenal writer. Every story she releases will forever stay with me. Loved every single book by her, not one have I not liked. The Filthy Marcello's collection features Anton and his three sons Lucian, Giovanni, and Dante. So its four books in one, pretty awesome deal. Nobody messes with the Marcello's, everyone knows that if they do, expect to have a bullet through the head. They own the city, and nobody takes what's there's! This is my favorite series by the Lovely Bethany, and she got me hooked to mafia romance.
A must read series!
Giovanni is my personal favorite. The black sheep, the lone wolf. Sigh just writing this review, makes me want to read his book again.

Mafia Hard.....Good And Filthy

Bethany-Kris has a way of telling a story that immediately captures your attention and draws you in. She has a unique way of twisting the family bond through the intrigue of each Filthy Marcello story. This family structure is unique to Mafia stories. The family is not only strong in their crime circuit but strong as a family. The father and sons have each other's backs. They are four strong...Lucian, Giovanni, Dante, and Antony....and they are filthy!

Lucian's story gives a feel of the family dynamics along with his story. He is the eldest. A strong alpha male who knows what he wants. Once he sets his sights on Jordyn, he is a man on a mission. A mission to protect his family and Jordyn. He is Marcello strong.

Giovanni's story shows us what it is like to be the youngest in the Marcello crime family. He is standoffish to outsiders although he loves the ladies. He does his job as a Capo well. It is what he loves about his life. This is until he meets Kim.

Dante's story is about a shift in the family and how it changes him. He needs to lead the family in his way in the direction he wants. In order to do this, he has to have a woman by his side. Catrina is this woman for him. A partner in all sides of life. She is one of the strongest woman characters I have read in a long time. Dante isn't even ready for how strong she is.

Antony's story gives us background on him, Cecelia and the family. I loved both of them in the prior books, so it was exciting to read their story. The story of how they became filthy. The story of Antony's role in La Cosa Nostra.

This series provides intrigue and suspense. The Marcello family continues to live life as a strong family along with a strong Mafia crew. They are unique in their strength for each other. This is one of my ultimate favorite mafia romance series. Thanks, Bethany-Kris. I love these filthy boys.

Another highly penned mafia family romance; the entire collection

I first heard of Bethany-Kris with her Chicago War series -- another mafia/crime family romantic series. That one followed the members of the famiglia, some of whom were bound by blood; Filthy Marcellos was released first, though, and follows only blood.

I always knew I wanted to continue reading Bethany-Kris's books; she writes the crime family extremely well. So I knew that at some point I would read this story. After the Marcellos made a cameo in Chicago War, though, I knew it had to happen quickly.

I very much enjoyed this family. I loved the fight and the emotion; I loved the broken ones and I loved watching everyone falling and finding what their parents had/have. If crime romance is for you, pick this up. If highly protective alpha men are for you, pick this up.

And if series that morph into new series that follow the next generation? Pick this up.

Because this is a series that's going to keep giving, and I cannot wait.

In the Novel Quiet Strength,Tony Dungy walks us through his life as a Christian. He describes his childhood, where he learned from his parents on what living a Christian life should be like. He explained his struggles as he went through high school and college on how he didn’t know what his own relationship with Christ was. He then tells us how he begins to find his way and figure out what he wants. He takes us through his journey with his wife and family and all of the challenges they were faced with and how Christ helped them. Reading about Tony Dungy’s life and how he overcame so many obstacles while keeping a relationship with Christ made me feel like he was directly talking to me about my own personal struggles. The way he described each struggle he was faced with, made it feel like I was there, experiencing those obstacles along side of him. The way he wrote and described these obstacles allowed me to relate to them and understand his pain and joy through them. As I was reading the novel I found it hard to stay focused on the plot when he began to further explain the football games that were not relevant to the story at the time. I would highly suggest this novel to any athlete that has struggles, finding that they are playing for themselves rather than playing for Christ. This novel really makes you feel like you can do anything through Christ, and it will have a good outcome, no matter when that outcome happens. It is not only just for athletes but also for anyone who feels like they are struggling with life, or something they are passionate about. This novel really spoke to me personally as an athlete and a follower of Christ. If having to rate this novel, I would rate it an eight out of a ten. One of my favorite, most interesting, and personal books I have ever read.

Very Motivational and Inspirational

I was looking for a book that I would enjoy reading while also improving my practice of Christianity in everyday life. With football being one of my top interests, I decided that this book sounded like a good choice to try out, and it did not disappoint.

Tony describes the road that he has taken through life from early childhood all the way to the time that he wrote this book in 2008. He explains the difficult decisions that he had to make and how his relationship and faith in God helped him through the most challenging times and in the end made him a better person. Tony also tells his successes and how he truly believes the Lord used previous life experiences to prepare him for similar future ones.

Whether you are a football fan or not this book is extremely relatable and motivational. Tony draws on his career as an NFL player and coach because that is where he experienced some of his biggest challenges, but he also builds on the toughest times that his family endured. His ability to correlate a personal example to the numerous types of situations that we as humans face daily was spectacular. Tony does an amazing job of not only stating his regrets and contentment, but also elaborates on what signs he saw from God and how he was able to later reflect on them.

The effect of this book has made me want to change my way of living by constantly glorifying God and following his lead. Dungy also provided me with inspiration to continuously perform acts of kindness, regardless of its size because it could be something that changes a person’s life, as it did in his case. “Quiet Strength” was very deserving of its Bestseller accolade and is very much recommended for anyone interested in living a happier and more rewarding lifestyle.

A Man of God and Football

Tony Dungy is extraordinarily represented in the beautiful memoir written by Nathan Whitaker that articulates the struggles and wonders of his amazing life journey. As I read this book the hope that came to my mind was the wish that more men would look at trials in life the way that Dungy has. As a professional athlete, and later a very successful NFL coach, Dungy displays the character of a God fearing man and what it looks like to live that life out in the football league. Quiet Strength speaks to a very special bond that fathers should long to have with their family. One must learn to lead with a soft heart and possess passion when in a position that compels you to change those around you, as others will pick up on your behavior like those around Dungy did, and use that passion to excite themselves in all that they do. I will be passing along this book to numerous family members as the season of Christmas is upon us, in hopes that they gain a new outlook on the opportunities that present themselves to us on a daily basis through the words of Dungy.

Reservation Blues, which won the American Book Award in 1995, is a touching look at modern life on the Spokane Indian Reservation. When legendary blues guitarist Robert Johnson shows up on the rez with his enchanted guitar and a dark secret, Thomas Builds-the-Fire begins a journey of self-discovery and painful realization that will forever change him and his friends. After the magical guitar ends up in his hands, Thomas forms Coyote Springs, a band made up of two seemingly unmotivated drunks Victor and Junior, and two Flathead Indian sisters, Checkers and Chess. The book chronicles the bands' humble beginnings playing at the local bar on the rez to a hopeful encounter with record executives in New York City. It is within this context that Alexie is able to confront serious issues facing the Indian community today with his own subtle sense of humor.

The straight forward plot is layered with metaphorical connections to a general Indian past, while each character is forced to confront haunting personal issues. For Thomas, it is the embarrassment of his alcoholic itinerant father. For Victor, it is the sexual abuse he faced at the hand of the reservation priest. For Checkers and Chess, it is a feeling of loneliness, the search for a "good Indian man," and being seen as outcasts on a reservation not their own. Ironically, their music is the only thing which gives them a feeling of power and inner strength, yet it is the opportunities provided by this music that alienate them from their own people.

Alexie believes the problems facing Indians today are the same faced by their ancestors 100 years ago. An obvious example is the names of the record executives for "Cavalry Records," Mr. Sheridan, Mr. Wright, and Mr. Armstrong; a direct link to the Generals who murdered their ancestors. Signing away your freedom in exchange for an empty promise is an idea which transcends the generations for Indians; the record contract and the peace treaty. Another problem Alexie confronts is the relationship between half-breeds and full-bloods. In his own original and comical way, Alexie uses a pick-up game of basketball which pits Thomas' father and the rez drunk, Leonard, against the half-breed Tribal police force. Insults fly, and the comedy that ensues is unforgettable.

Reservation Blues was a delight to read. Alexie is a talented writer whose gift for storytelling is enhanced by his social commentary and his humorous presentation. Few writers would be able to tackle such subject matter without the work falling into the category of a tragedy. Alexie's grasp of his people's sense of humor is unparalleled, and the jokes transcend racial and social lines. His ability to remain light-hearted when discussing suicide, alcohol, and rape is an impressive feat. It is not a surprise that he feels it is this very philosophy that gives Indians the ability to move forward and succeed. Focusing on the positive, while making light of the negative is a quality Alexie attributes to the survival of his culture. Overall, it is a story of accepting one's past in order to move forward. It is a story of hope, of survival, and of reality. Reservation Blues is more than a fictional work, it is a searing look at the political, social, and religious issues facing Indians today.

Where it all begins

I first read Hear the Wind Sing a good number of years ago; however, like many others reviewing this book, I did not "discover" it until after reading (or should I say "falling in love with") several other works by Murakami: A Wild Sheep Chase (which happens to be the final book of the "Trilogy of the Rat", of which Hear the Wind Sing is the first novel; although, to be perfectly honest, I think Sheep Chase works just fine as a standalone novel), Dance Dance Dance (a sequel to Sheep Chase, although again it works as a standalone), Hard Boiled Wonderland (my favorite Murakami novel), Norwegian Wood, Wind-Up Bird (this seems to be Murakami's most popular in the US, although not in Japan), at least one or two short story collections ... in other words, I was a pretty experienced Murakami hand before coming across his first novel. At the time, I remember enjoying it but thinking that it did not stack up to these later works I had already read and been blown away by ... if anything it felt a bit like a poor man's version of Norwegian Wood, Murakami's best-selling work that also deals with similar themes and is notable for also being relatively light on the "magical realism" which is now Murakami's hallmark. However, still not bad as a first novel by the author that at that time I would've called one of my favorite authors (perhaps even my favorite author).

Over time, however, I became a bit disillusioned with Murakami's recent offerings. Kafka still entertained, but seemed to be missing a bit of the mojo and originality that characterized his earlier works. After Dark was shockingly bad. Reading the first two volumes of 1Q84 was laborious work, and until volume 3 came out a year later I was honestly unsure whether the book was complete after those first two volumes or after three (and indeed, there are rumors--fanned by Murakami himself--that there might even be a *fourth* volume at some point). These recent works were still receiving remarkable critical praise, but it felt like reviewers were reading a different book than I was; I hadn't felt truly gripped or moved since reading Wind-Up Bird (which isn't even my favorite Murakami work, in large part due to the large amount of unfinished and unconnected story lines). Reading the most recent work, 1Q84, didn't leave me hungry for what was next; it rather left me nostalgic for Murakami's earlier works: less polished, but more profound, more compelling ... more fun. I started to worry a bit whether it was Murakami who was slipping, or whether I had simply fallen out of love with the unique world and words of Murakami Haruki. So, in that frame of mind, I picked up Hear the Wind Sing this past weekend to see if the old Murakami magic could be rekindled.

I was pleased to find out that yes indeed it could be. Hear the Wind Sing is clearly unpolished and rough around the edges, but it still has that Murakami mojo and clearly foreshadows the wonderful works that would follow it. Although the "magical realism" aspect is much more limited than in most of Murakami's subsequent works, it is still there (most memorable for me was the excerpt from the made-up Derek Heartfield story about the wells of Mars). Honestly, the seed of just about every theme and motif Murakami would eventually nurture into maturity in later works appears in this novel: wells, enigmatic women (who are often "missing" something), drinking, loveless sex, disillusionment, detachment, the passive Boku narrator, Western music, music stores, death, World War II, China, mistrust of corporations, the moon, nighttime, water (be it the rain or the ocean), elephants, alienation ... I could go on and on (even the seeds of Murakami's short-comings as an author are in here, including his maddening tendency to start but often not resolve disparate story lines, which works in smaller doses such as here in Hear the Wind Sing but is a detraction, for me at least, in some of his longer works where the threads seem to fray and unravel a bit by the end). Even in this short work, one could literally open any page and find at least one notable "Murakami motif". Despite its unpolished nature--or perhaps because of it--it made me hungry to go on and re-read some of Murakami's other (and even better) works that followed it. It also left me a bit bittersweet as well--despite critical acclaim that works such as 1Q84 are Murakami's magnum opus, I can't help but think that when all is said and done, we will look back on Murakami's works from the decade or so spanning the mid-80s to the mid-90s (roughly from A Wild Sheep Case through Wind-Up Bird, including his excellent short stories during that time) as the height of Murakami's creativity and talent.

In the end, although not his best work by any means, Hear the Wind Sing is still the departure point for what would become the literary phenomenon that is Murakami Haruki. I think it is too bad that Murakami has fought to keep this work (and Pinball, 1973) all but impossible to find for the English speaking audience, but I have the feeling that at some point these works will see the light of day again, even if it is not until after Murakami passes away (the potential for profit will be too unavoidable for the publishers, I believe). Personally, I hope that the Murakami fan does not have to wait until his passing for that day to come, however. Rather than try to hide these early works, I wish Murakami would actually embrace them and even re-read and learn from them. I hope my prognostication about Murakami's golden age being long past is incorrect, but after reading every work since Wind-Up Bird thinking "is *this* the one?" (with the nuance changing from "is this the one that will be remembered as Murakami's greatest work?" to the more despairing "is this the one where Murakami finally gets his mojo back?") with the answer being "no" each time, I worry my fears may be true. If so, that makes his earlier works all the more precious. If you are a Murakami fan, do yourself a favor and track down this book to see where Murakami started; it is a short read that will be well worth your time.

The work of a young writer

Although readable, this is not an accomplished work. It feels very much like what it is: the work of a young writer. Few of his novels are truly linear, but this is more stream-of-consciousness in approach. One can see the seeds of the mature Murakami, though to read this, one would not guess at the illustrious career to come. Typical of his later work, the main character is an unnamed young man, and various people come in and out of his life. His bar-buddy “Rat” will appear in several of his major novels to come. The narrator and Rat become writers, and the most interesting part of the "Wind/Pinball" edition is Murakami’s preface about how he became a writer. Although this is often referred to as the first in the "Rat Trilogy," it is not essential to the enjoyment of his tour-de-force, "A Wild Sheep Chase." The short episode of the Martian Wells is a glimpse of his future writing.

For fans of 'A Wild Sheep Chase' and 'Dance, Dance, Dance'

It's shorter than I expected, (the book itself is about 5 x 3 inches, so good for a pocket, I suppose), but it's good Murakami. Offers some back-story on characters from Sheep Chase and Dance, and while nothing really mystical or surprising happens it's interesting to read through earlier work by the author. It struck me that his protagonist, who is the same as in Sheep Chase and Dance, is, like the author, much younger and with very different priorities than in the later works. He also has a different outlook, seems more human and vulnerable (not quite as Sam Spade as the author's later characters) which again gives the reader an interesting glimpse of the author as a younger, less experienced author. The translation's not as great as his newer stuff, which I've read he translates himself, but hey, it's "new-to-me" Murakami, so who the hell's complaining?
