Essential content, muscular English, INEXPENSIVE

I've had these two books for just a few weeks and have read everything at least twice, many chapters many more times than that. Each time I go through I find something new. They only seem expensive. For the person who wants to move beyond merely producing a well made variation of a factory guitar, the information in these books can put you 10 or 15 years ahead of where you are now in your quest. What's that worth on a per year basis? They seem under priced when I think of them this way.

They are also useful for players and collectors who wish to expand their understanding of how the instrument works. To pick one example from many instances, Mr. Somogyi will tell you how a blues guitar benefits from a certain bracing pattern while a finger picked guitar works better using a different design.

The author is a master builder who has earned his place in the history of lutherie, yet he openly discusses methods that are alternatives to the ones he uses, right alongside his own approach. When one knows as much as Mr. Somogyi, there is no need to be dogmatic. Likewise, when one writes as well as Mr. Somogyi, there is no obfuscation of complex discussions, yet neither does he talk down to the reader. He treats his readers with respect and offers direct, plain-English access to what he has learned from his many years of rather profound work. At times, he demonstrates great love for the reader as well.

The books are beautifully made too. The paper is substantial, the photographs excellent, the layout elegant, all of which make them both easy and pleasurable to read. Contrary to one opinion expressed here, Somogyi did not need better advice about how to write a book. He set out to make the best books he could make and succeeded to the extent anyone who wants to do their best succeeds.

November 27, 2012: I've had the books for many months now. I added the word "INEXPENSIVE" to my review title for a very plain reason: These books contain more useful information than all the other lutherie books in my collection combined. The total cost of the other books was more than these two. Hence, using my "bang for the buck" scale, Somogyi's books cost the least.

I also recommend his DVD for anyone seeking to understand his "secret". The secret is there, almost naked, when he taps out a top that he tells the audience is destined to become the top of a finished Somogyi guitar. It is so openly presented some my miss its importance. "Tone" is the result of several entities: species of soundboard, thickness, grains per inch, brace design, choice and configuration of bracewood, surface area of top, location and size of soundhole, and so on. When combined, each specific mix contributes to the specific tone and responsiveness of a specific top. There is no single element that can be isolated from the others and declared "the secret", which frustrates many who follow Somogyi. A member of the audience wants to see the braces. Somogyi refuses. I'd bet dollars to donuts what is behind the "mystery top" is some variation of the many Somogyi tops photographed in the books. That is, it looked more or less like most other X-Braced tops made by advanced luthiers today. The braces are but one ingredient of many. Somogyi had already revealed his "secret" when he tapped out the top into a very high quality microphone recording the session. It is a good idea to play back that short segment over and over until you have a solid sense of the sound he generously offers to anyone who wishes to listen. Unlike factory guitars, guitars at his level are not the result of following specifications as closely as possible. While specs are a part of the process - and he offers many concrete, measured suggestions, such as top thickness, brace configurations, etc. - they are the starting point, not the final destination. That is reached in the adjusting process known as "voicing". Until you hear and internalize the sound of a great raw top, you are not voicing but rather removing wood and hoping.

That is, when a luthier builds a top he or she must be able to achieve and recognize a certain sound before the box is closed, finished, neck and strings attached, then finally played. There is little you can alter at that stage. However, when the top is still "raw" you can make changes to its "voice". The Somogyi DVD reveals in a very specific way what that "voice" sounds like when voicing is completed. Buy the books if you want to see what his braces look like, if you want to know his ball park specs, the woods he uses, the jigs, the molds, how to French Polish, determine neck set angle, join neck and body, bridge height, saddle construction, etc. Buy the books if you want to understand how the various parts can be altered and the likely outcomes of specific alterations and their combinations. Buy the DVD if you want to hear what the whole package - in the raw - ultimately sounds like. Buy them all if guitar making is important to you.

I also want to address whether these are beginner's books. The sheer volume of the discussion may lead some to think they are not "practical" for beginners. Certainly, they are a large meal that no one can digest in a few settings, whether beginner or expert. But if you are a serious beginner, they are extremely important, because they are utterly basic. They cover the foundation of what is of necessity a long journey. I have made some "good" guitars. If these books and DVD had been available when I started, they would have been much better, including the very first one. My other books would have been more useful to me if I had known the foundation he offers. If it is your first guitar you will still need something very specific, like the David Russell Young book, which is clearly written and not much money if you look for a used copy on Amazon. But if you don't alter Young's instructions with what you can learn and hear from the Somogyi material, you will get a good guitar that is overbuilt and restrained, though long on playability, and will sound as good or better than most factory guitars. But it won't be as good as it could be if you had digested just a little of what Somogyi offers.

Assuming your shop has most of the tools needed, there is still considerable money to be invested in quality materials for just one guitar, not to mention the immense about of time it takes to do the first one well from a technical point of view. We routinely pay $75 per hour to get our cars fixed. Somogyi's materials cost pennies per hour of use, and will pay off with an astonishing guitar, even if it is your first effort. You would do well to follow Young's advice to keep it simple looking because decoration contributes nothing to sound and decoration sloppily done hurts, rather than helps, the look, while consuming hours of time. But I would not worry about avoiding rosewood (as Young suggests). Instead, use quartersawn Indian rosewood, which is expensive, but not much more expensive than good quality mahogany. It is very stable and easy to work and you will get a more "live" instrument. Both authors suggest a laminated neck you carve yourself, but a CNC pre carved neck would do fine, especially if you avoid the difficult to fit dovetail joint. If you read nothing else in Somoygi, read his discussion of tops in both books and listen to his finished top in the DVD. Follow his suggestions and with a modicum of care, your first guitar should sound better than any factory guitar you can buy and many hand made instruments.

Whether you are a beginner or expert, never forget that the best instruments are achieved by paying attention to the basics. That is where great sound is born. That is what Somogyi's books and DVD cover.

A masterwork

I purchased this book personally from the author over a year ago and was, and continue to be, absolutely delighted with it. This is a must-have book for the serious acoustic steel-string guitar maker. It is NOT an introductory how-to book. It is rather the masterwork of one of the greatest luthiers of our time, summarizing a life-time of experience. We live in the golden age of guitar-making; there are more luthiers today than ever. The field (at least for steel string guitars) is vibrant and creative, with many different schools of thought, building, and design. This book is the personal perspective of one of the most successful, respected, and yes sometimes controversial, guitar makers alive today.

Besides a wealth of information on theory, design, and construction, there is, underlying, a consistent philosophical thread throughout. This distinguishes it from any merely mechananistic "how to" book on guitar making, or virtually any other craft. The author's genius is that he communicates this philosophy, not directly or ponderously at all; its just sort of there, embedded in his lively and highly readable writing.

The nitty-gritty of guitar making

These books are full of information for the more serious guitar builder. It would suit serious beginners and those who are more experienced also. I have started reading the second book first (Making the responsive Guitar), as I am building my first guitar at the moment. I was blown away by the amount of equipment that Ervin has in his shop...more than I think most people would have. He has a wall of about 15 laminate trimmers, I guess each with a different bit! However, great to see how this master goes about his work. Definitely worth the money. Especially when I have seen these books for sale in Australia for $650, which is ridiculous and shameful. I highly recommend, but like all guitar building books, you'll have your own way of doing things, or don't have the same machinery etc. Great exposure to Ervin's methods.

Bill Tompkins was embedded in the world of secrecy as a teenager, when the Navy took his personal ship models out of a Hollywood department store because they showed the classified locations of the radars and gun emplacements. This book is a partial autobiography about his life to the beginning of the 1970s including some of his early work for TRW.
Selected by the Navy prior to completing high school to be authorized for research work, he regularly visited classified Naval facilities during WWII until he was discharged in 1946. After working at North American Aviation and Northrop, he was hired by Douglas Aircraft Company in 1950, and when they found out about his involvement in classified work, was given a job as a to create design solutions as a draftsman with a peripheral assignment to work in a “think tank”. This work was partly controlled by the Navy personnel who used to work for James Forrestal, who was allegedly assassinated because he was going to publicly reveal what he knew about UFOs. Bill Tompkins was asked to conceive sketches of mile-long Naval interplanetary craft designs.
Later, as he became involved in the conventional aspects of the Saturn Program that later became the Apollo launch vehicle, his insight to system engineering resulted in his offering some critical suggestions personally to Dr. Wernher von Braun about ensuring more reliable checkout using the missiles in their vertical position and also some very efficient launch control concepts adopted by both NASA and the Air Force.
This story is peppered with very personal interactions with his co-workers and secretaries, some of whom the author believes to be Nordic aliens helping the “good guys” here on Earth. Towards the end of this volume of his autobiography, he sketches what he personally saw on TV when Armstrong was landing on the moon.
Born in May 1923, Bill Tompkins is one of the few survivors of the “big war” who is still healthy, married to the same girl Mary, and is willing to tell his story about what he really did during his aerospace life in the 40s, 50s and 60s that relate to aliens, NASA and secrets that now can be told.

Whistle-blower=hero! Great disclosure of multiple aerospace black projects for truth movement. Now the whistle-blowers of the SSP like Corey Goode and Randy Cramer, Michael Relfe have more information in their camp to substantiate their claims by this disclosure. Tompkins' Think Tank designs and plans explain places thousands have dwelled and worked on Mars and in the solar system. Someone should do a round-table interview and post on Youtube with William Mills Tompkins & Randy Cramer, who lived at Forward station Zebra (Horseshoe design) quite far from Aries Prime and discuss the Naval Base city living and day to day living, command centers and technologies and the classes of Naval Space ships that Tompkins conceived in his plans! Would be so interesting and appreciated!

May Surprise readers: Nazi syndicates still thrive

Ran across a name of German friend's Dad in the book. He was a Nazi aerospace engineer from Operation Paperclip post WWII. These are husbands, grandfathers, friends, OUR neighbors. We are in this together!

There are hard to read parts: Key Club...Occult behavior and unhealthy sexuality, manipulation of the engineers! People who are abducted or vanish! Deals to exchange ET technology allowing syndicates to abduct humans for DNA. But to heal we must accept these dark parts of the narrative...The leadership giving up our free will to allow us to be in this master slave arrangement with the reptilians-enough already. We need to grow up, move on and raise our consciousness to heal and enter the golden age and be a good galactic neighbor and custodian of earth.

In the book, Selected by Extraterrestrials, author Bill Tompkins attempts to reveal his memories of his life up until about 1970. In some reports, he had copies of documents that supported his recollections. In others, he did not. One of those was an alleged recollection of a conversation held with Jacques Vallee when Jacques would have been a teen-ager in the 1950s since Vallee was born in 1939. Since Vallee’s own autobiography (Forbidden Science, volumes 1 and 2) clearly implies that he was never in the U.S. prior to 1962, it is likely that the Tompkins’ recollection of this conversation is incorrect, perhaps with respect to both timing and scope. As the editor of this book, I should have been more aggressive in establishing the authenticity or lack thereof for this quote. I have seen no written evidence that such statements were made and I believe that author Bill Tompkins does not have such evidence either.
I therefore feel it proper to apologize to Dr. Vallee for attributing to him a quote that appears to be quite unsubstantiated, and recommend that those interested in his life with respect to the UFO issue read both of his volumes of Forbidden Science and become acquainted with the exceptional insight he has offered to the UFO phenomenon in his many books and publications.

Read, if you dare, the high degree of truth will blow your mind.

Deeply troubling to learn about the truth of ET and UFO reality. A highly revealing work, it is absolutely a 'game changer' in relation to our understanding of this earth-shaking truth. Where has all of our tax payer dollars gone. . . .? Isn't it about time, we be informed by our government officials about what we as taxpayers have achieved via development of ET technology. This book is sexually very explicit and it may detract from the validity of the material, but the ET influence on the human mind can be measured by these sexually-influenced outcomes of R & D.
A very unusual book about a highly unusual topic, a must read, if you dare.

New Best Friend!

I was pleasantly surprised by the Color Mixing Bible, it had more to it than I could have hoped for! I bought it to help ME make better choices in the acrylics I was about to invest in but, as a drawing and painting teacher, I have used it to help students in preliminary exercises with pastels, my advanced students have used it for setting up their pencil "palette" before starting assignments, my graphics students, who are into cartooning, have snatched it for the ink mixing section, the "subject mix" section has helped some of my Fundamentals students understand what to look for in making a formal analysis of artists' palettes, the book is new and already lovingly abused! Ian Sidaway has provided clear and consistent visual tables of results that have helped me and my students make better choices the first time with fewer of the unhappy accidents that occur in the haste of classrooms and deadlines. I particularly enjoy the "Watchpoints" that offer tips and caveats about certain pigments and their behaviors.
I strongly recommend the Color Mixing Bible to artists that work in different media; sometimes we get stuck mixing in a medium that just doesn't respond as expected because we are less practiced in it. This book allows the opportunity to make visual comparisons between media as we work.

Excellent Resource for Building Solid and Multiplying Community Groups

Brad House is on staff at Mars Hill Church in Seattle - a church that is solid theologically, philosophically, and missionally. They are a church that is exceptional in theological depth and missional outreach in impacting their culture for the sake of Christ. The message of the gospel comes through loud and clear, and without compromise in both their corporate and communal contexts. In one of the least churched cities in America they have proven that what took place in the book of Acts, is still possible today - especially through the medium of the teaching of the Word and its balanced application within the context of community groups.

According to the author one study indicates that less than 18% of young evangelicals ages 18-23 participate in a small group, Bible study, or prayer group that is sponsored by their local churches. This book is not only written to combat this problem, but provides ample Biblical solutions and real life illustrations of how to build a solid foundation for building community groups that are healthy and result in personal, corporate, and communal life transformation via living out the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I highly recommend this book for the following types of people:

1) Senior Pastors - It will motivate you to launch community groups in your church and help you to be more strategic and missional in your ministries of in reach and outreach.
2) Existing Small Group Leaders and Participants - It will help give you ideas, tools, and applications that you have never thought of - in order to have a more effective, strategic, and balanced community group.

A fantastic resource for leading and living in biblical community.

'Community', with the bold subtitle "Taking your small group off life support" was written with a clear goal to do just that, however unpopular it may be. This book comes at a timely point in the Reformission movement where we have a bevy of churches, leaders and small group attendees who are tired of the old systems and methods of "community" that seem to be nothing more than an awkward social gathering, yet are unsure on how to cross into organic and truly gospel-made community.

The Foundation:

Community, broken into three major sections, starts out by laying a theological groundwork for community in the church. This first section does what it was written to do, which is remind the reader of the gospel and the gospel's communal implications, which is essential to building any foundation or vision because "A clear view of God puts life into perspective" (P.37). House uses a host of effective charts, graphs and diagrams to create a clear understand of the church's biblical call to community and the practice of that call. Community is able to successfully avoid being theoretic and successfully springboards into a healthy deconstruction of the current state of the social purgatory that is most churches "small groups ministry".

The Health Plan:

House gets to the root of the problem, which is, community has become an "event, rather than a lifestyle" (P.96-97). So House digs and digs and digs so much so that you will read this and hopefully feel some holy discontentment in this area. House talks about why non Christians do not and would not feel comfortable in the typical `small group' setting in the Church, and where we Christians have built barriers instead of bridges to the culture around us (p.128) by the way we do small group. House deals here especially with `barriers' (defined as `Issues of practice, culture and perception that inhibit the progress of the gospel" P.128) that tend to be legitimized, accepted as inevitable and pardoned in our church, such as expecting minimal time commitment, flipping the conversational switch from "small-talk" to "spiritual" in the after dinner `drum-circle' (P.98), and that unavoidable awkwardness in most small group settings. But within this second part of the book, House does not leave us out to dry, but offers stories, models and insights as to how to practically break the cycle of unhealthy community in both gospel-founded and culturally conscious ways (the exact purpose of this blog!). In this part of the book especially, House says things that I truly haven't heard before that sharpened my understanding and motivated me to action.

Treatment:

Community finishes with a section that cleans up and restores order to everything the first two sections have dissected. This is the part where House clearly articulates practical leadership needs, potential pitfalls in rebuilding as well as lay out the framework that has worked so well for Mars Hill, a 10,000+ person church with networks of intimate community and pastoral care that a church of 150 would be lucky to see. One of the most interesting things about this section is House's detailed layout of Mars Hill's community group leader training outlines, (including homework for leaders, and leadership meeting structure) along with a fantastic appendix that includes a blank outline for those interested in using Mars Hill's model.

By the end of the book church leaders should feel significantly more prepared to train up new leaders, reach out to the community around them and experience more concrete, gospel-centered fellowship in the context of small group community. I would strongly recommend this book to church leadership and those who are not satisfied with the depth of their small group and want to start gospel-change. And while the book was not perfect, some topics were neglected and I was left with a few questions mostly on leadership expectations and discipleship, Community is an exceptional Operator Manuel for gospel-driven small groups that make disciples, build cultural bridges and love people well.

You Need Community...

I was privileged to get a copy of Brad House's book Community: Taking Your Small Group off Life Support (RE: Lit), the latest in the RE:LIT series. House serves as a pastor at Mars Hill Church, Seattle, where he oversees community groups for the multi-site church. For me, a good book is built on the basics of God's Word and filled with practicality, or what the foundational truth from God's Word should look like fleshed out.

The tension in a book on a particular facet of ministry is that while a broad cross section of evangelicalism may agree that something is important and even rooted in God's Word, we may disagree on its practice. I thought House did a great job of helping us see that what Mars Hill Church has chosen to do, how it has come out of Biblical conviction, but isn't meant to be replicated by every church. We are responsible, however, to flesh out community in our midst and this is the real strength of the book.

In Part 1, the foundation (or as he calls them, Building Blocks For Life) is unpacked. This lays some biblical footings for how the book will flesh itself out in the later chapters. Why do we need community? How did God create us for this and other truths.

Part 2, health plan, helps to lead us in a positive direction by helping us see the different facts of community that need to be considered. How should groups function, how often should they meet, where should they meet, what should they do? Are you getting a feel for the practical side yet?

Part 3, treatment, gives us ways to effect change in our groups. In other words, I'm given practical tools in this section to go about changing things from the way we've always done them. This includes not only changing the past, but equipping leaders for the future.

Positives in this book include getting a great feel for what the Bible says about community, how those are fleshed out in a local church taking those commands seriously, humility in communicating what has been pursued, stories of how pursuing this has helped, as well as what I've already mentioned: practical things.

Negatives for me were that it is a longer read. At times I felt the book drag. This might have been my fatigue or the time of life when I'm reading this (3 kids under 5), but as I pressed through, it proved to be time well spent.

House has definitely thought deeply about this issue. And if community is something you would like help in applying or tweaking in your particular ministry, then this book would be a book worthy of your time and investment.
