Horoscopes is a hauntingly beautiful piece of work, and Anderson is easily the most promising author I've read in a long time. Never before has the story of a ghost trapped in stasis been told so well -- perhaps because it's the sort of a story that has never before been told by the ghost himself.

Why is AIDS still seen as a white gay disease when a quarter of deaths from AIDS from 1981-1991 were among black males? Using examples from a variety of cultural contexts, ranging from sports and pop music to literature and television, Harper investigates these questions in an effort to show the ways in which narrow definitions of black manhood have failed to acknowledge real differences within the African-American community--to grave social and political effect. He examines recent phenomena, such as reactions to ABC anchorman Max Robinson's AIDS-related death and Magic Johnson's HIV status, as well as the homophobia and chauvinism of the Black Arts movement of the '60s and '70s, the construction of black "crossover" identity from Motown and Diana Ross to Run-DMC and MTV and the way that "street" authenticity is incorporated into Michael Jackson's choreography. He unravels the gender politics behind the "passing" novels of the Harlem Renaissance, scrutinizes black masculinity as seen through the eyes of the white protagonist of the 1961 autobiographical narrative Black Like Me and explores early representations of African Americans on television shows like "Julia" and "Room 222." Upholding the recent success of drag performer RuPaul, who demonstrates the limits of traditional notions of black masculinity by openly defying them, Harper suggests that popular culture is able to transcend its own representations and points to a future in which "black male" is no longer a homogenizing term.
An original, far-reaching and ultimately humane work of cultural criticism, Harper's book argues convincingly that there are no innocent texts, and forces us to reexamine the culture that surrounds us. I didn’t start out to write this book. I was halfway through another story and stuck. So I decided to set that story aside and write something short, intending to get back to the first one in just a bit. But what to write? It was summer and thoughts of high school dates at the lake kept coming to mind—including a coconut cream pie fight we won’t speak of.

What if? Not my lake and not even close to my own story, but within a week, Nicole and Jake were in my head, insisting their story be told.

I love romance in books, movies, and songs. And in real life. Second chance stories are a particular favorite. About two weeks after I started writing Unfinished, we made contact with a friend we’d lost track of and discovered that the year before, he’d married his first love. After fifty years apart! First love did, indeed, get a second chance.

It’s time for me to get back to the story that’s been waiting. Logan and Steve, my imaginary friends, are ready to talk.

Don't let the cover fool you, this is one of the best I've ever read

WOW!!! I just have to take a few moments as my thoughts are ping-ponging on how to describe my state after reading this book. My first reaction was ... Dang, is this actually the last page I turning?

I was approached by Ms Hammond's assistant to review this book and truthfully the cover led me to think... A sweet contemporary novel boy, girl and an HEA. Ok no worries it will be light and fun.

HELLO!!! FAR FROM IT!! And I know that the words I write here still will not fully express my true experience in reading "Unfinished".
It is truly a wonderful must!

I began reading and then realized I totally misjudged the complexity and fullness of a fantastic woven, layered story. We are introduced to a sweet sassy h, Nicole and a wrong-side-a-the-tracks H, Jake who fall in love over summer. The story opens letting you know you're 23 years ahead and then we cast back to the beginning when a damaged boy meets the accepting ray of 'Sunshine' who turns his world around and for her this angsty guy is her first love. The build is so well done and the structure keeps your emotions climbing and although they find each other again physically, they have so much healing and letting go to reach each other emotionally.

This is one well written book of the lives of two well-rounded, believable characters, right down to the fact that this "sweet contemporary story" was actually a full blown, messy, real-to-actual-life believable, no holes barred, sensual, knock your socks off journey that traversed 23 years of what ifs, horrible childhood experiences, coming of age, and finally healing. I got so caught up in this story that knowing how the characters looked, if the H was sexy and the h had attitude, was so not the priority. The spicy bits were very welcome but they fell so naturally in the story they were part of it rather that the hook to catch the reader, as in some books. The storyline has layers and layers married with the paint style of the h, Nicole, whose work was referenced throughout the flow as milestones in their journey.

My thoughts are totally my own, and my only issues are, that the cover does not do the words justice as it seems frivolous compared to the depth inside. The price I must say is a giveaway as I have seen and read books that are much more expensive and are so airy and flat in comparison.
Ms Hammond I am so grateful to Joann for contacting me and sharing your fantastic book with me and I am so enamored with it. It is on the top shelf of my library and I am now concreted as a fan of your work.
Gifts are so rare and for us readers who appreciate a really good story that is realistic and has so many messages and morals within (and o don't forget a bit of sauce and spice too ) you have hit every check mark with a huge tick mark. Again thank you.

Time Changed for Me as I Read "Unfinished"

I'm going to admit to knowing Susan and to have heard her read bits of this novel last Spring in writer's group. I dropped away from the group but was given the opportunity to read the finished work so I did. Now I'm a guy. I don't read romance novels. I'm into SF, suspense, legal, and high tech books. Seriously, I wouldn't consider romance if it were the last book in the world. But I wanted to see what Susan accomplished.

I read a few chapters, got distracted with my own technical writing for a few days, and picked it back up late the Saturday when we changed from Daylight Savings Time to Standard Time. I kept watching the time on my iPad so I wouldn't read too late - which means 2 am for me. I just kept on reading until I finished the book. It made me want to keep going. Then I looked at a real clock and saw the iPad had changed time on me. It was 3:30 am! Yikes! Duh! The iPad changed time one me!

Is this well written? Yes! Is it suspenseful? Yup! Could I put it down? Nope!

Susan did a great job of bringing in real life situations that shaped Jake's life. I nodded at least twice as his experiences paralleled my own or others I've known. I could see Nicole in people I know. I also at various times in the book wanted to grab both of them and shake them until they came to their senses. That's how real Susan made them.

Beautifully crafted.

A delightful, captivating romp of a story. But what sets this book apart is the quality of the writing. Hammond is a craftsman of the language; the prose is tight, polished, and makes you want to linger over each sentence. A magnificent first novel.

Totally plagarized and garbage to boot.

This book is copied almost word for word from a 1961 book called "Successful Winemaking at Home" by H.E. Bravery, which original text can be purchased here on Amazon.

The idiot whose name appears on this book, "Brian Cook" has even gone so far as to substitute his name in Mr. Bravery's eponymously appellated recipes. What kind of worthless human being would stoop to that level? He's trying to hide his theft and cover his tracks but the rest of the book is copied word for word. He even passes off the anecdotes and history as if they were his own. I think that blatantly stealing another author's work for personal gain makes Brian Cook a scumbag and an idiot. It is apparent that there was almost no effort put forth to improve or personalize the writing, so it comes off as a garbled mishmash of English sensibility and the moron plagiarist's voice where they've tried to modernize or Americanize some of the text. Not only did he fail to improve the work, it actually makes it harder to read. Really classy, you creep.

In regards the contents of the book itself, it was likely state of the art for home winemaking back in the time it was written. Many of the recipes are unique to this book, at least I have been unable to find their equivalents in my collection of books on making wine.

In reading this edition it is very evident that the "author" of this version didn't actually even bother to make or test any of the recipes contained; as other reviewers have noted, many of the practices put forth as ideal or routine in this book will result in hooch at best. Jack Keller's site has many recipes using the same ingredients that'll produce far better wines and that information is free - although you can and should donate to help defray his costs to keep the site up.

If you're searching for interesting recipes, don't waste your time or money on this version - buy the original used. It's a charming glimpse into the past and might provoke some good ideas. I'm currently making several of these recipes (celery, mint, carrot, potato) albeit updated to modern techniques and ingredients.

In summation, do not reward the plagiarist jerk Brian Cook by buying this version.

In the Nazi rise to power a key role was played by the Nazi storm troopers – the SA. This was a paramilitary organization designed for defense of Nazi Party meetings and attacks on its political opponents. It formed the workforce for Nazi political activity in the lead up to the takeover of power in 1933. Despite its pivotal role until 1934, when it was purged and rendered politically powerless by Hitler, the SA has been surprisingly understudied by historians.

Wilfred von Oven’s Nazism was linked with the career of Josef Goebbels, both as propaganda minister and as Nazi party regional leader of Berlin in the early 1930s. Von Oven’s experience was of the SA in Berlin, perhaps the most extreme of the SA branches. The book is most valuable when it recounts von Oven’s own experiences in the SA, his own views at the time and his personal encounters with Goebbels.

This fascinating history is an unapologetic defense of the SA against postwar revelations – the author presents a strongly pro-SA point of view. Von Oven remained unrepentant to the end: indeed, not long before his death he described his experience of Nazi rule as ‘paradise’.

Firstly, I'd like to say I have actually read this book.
It's in the "interesting little gems" section of my WW2 history shelf and I gave it four rather than five stars because I think it's a bit overpriced for 168 pages of text.
That said, Wilfried v Oven's memoirs give some fascinating insights into not just the SA, but the Germany of that time, at street level so as to speak. This study made a refreshing change from reading about grand political and/or military strategy, interesting though they also are.

Eleanor Hancock's Introduction is brief and mainly useful for the brief biographical/career data she gives about the author. He supplies more detail, born 1912 in Bolivia to a father who returned to fight and who fell at Flanders, mother who kept the children together despite extreme poverty/ the Allied food blockade on Germany. The 1919 Communist uprising, Weimar Republic, rise of National-Socialism and the SA are interwoven with many references to the personalities involved, including spies and others of varied, even changeable, political affiliation.
W. von Oven was a member of the SA for just one year. His motive for leaving was the revolt by Walther Stennes, which was associated with the conditions for all serving in the SA. This and the personality of Ernst Roehm and what actually happened and why on/before Bad Wiessee on 30 June 1934 were the main areas of interest for me. There is lots more, mainly in short references (for example I found the role of von Papen something to follow up).
He also served as adjutant to Dr J. Goebbels, while not being a member of the NSDAP; interesting little passage relating what JG's reaction is when told this ...
All in all an interesting account for any student of the first half of the bloody 20th century in Europe.

Von Oven was a real teller of tall tales

The book was pretty interesting but not really much new info and the author straetched the truth and white washed anything that would make the NAZIs look bad but then again he never claimed to be anything other than a non repentent NAZI.........
