Build Muscle, Burn Fat, AND Eat Great?...Abs solutely!
By Dianne Quinn
I pre-ordered this book when I was browsing the fitness section here on amazon. I'm working on the comeback (post major injury and long term layoff) of my lifetime, comeback meaning I have been there before. Only this time I don't want to eat chicken breast and green beans 5 times a day, along with some egg whites, a couple whole eggs, more greens, an over cooked piece of fish, and a few shakes. When I was younger, and didn't have a family, that was fine. It worked, painful and boring as it was...this time I want to add some creativity to my meal plan, along with bringing my wife and kids along for the ride health wise.

My kids race BMX, and kids are kids when it comes to what they want to eat...its a constant battle as a parent to convince, or trick them into eating healthy a good part of the time. I know what they eat now, though they are not over weight thanks to their high activity rate, still has an impact on their development, and will impact their health later in life. I can honestly say this book will help me improve their diet, and in turn impact their lives greatly in the long run.

I've had this book for a couple weeks now, and its showing age already around the edges and the pages are being marked 'like' and 'try'. That is a sign of a home run in my house. As the owner of 76 fitness related books, starting with the original "Pumping Iron" I've held and read a few fitness/training books over the years... I now own three books written by Mike. This one, Bigger Leaner Stronger (highly recommended as well as this one for you guys) and I just bought my wife, for Valentines Day, "Thinner Leaner Stronger" (another great book by Mike, for you ladies)...I can honestly say Mike's written work is easy to read..and his basic, and yet so functionally to the point approach to fitness and diet is something you really need to check out for yourself.

This cook book is a must have if you're tired of that boring cutting, or clean bulking diet (the book contains both approaches)...it's a must have if you have a family and you want to really know what your feeding your kids, esp if they are young athletes (this book has no direct info on young athletes, that is just my opinion, but it is a healthy cookbook, ya know you can apply the method)...it's a must have if you are just starting out fitness wise and need some solid guidance on calorie contents and macros, along with an awesome amount of variety...it's a must have if you're making a midlife comeback like myself, and shiver when you think of eating chicken breast like you once punished yourself with long term.

The book also contains a lot, hang on I'll count em being I got up to count the other books on my shelves...61 full color photos the way I counted em (ie some area a two page spread I counted as one)...has a great introductory section on the basics of what macros are etc...and has a few really cool bonuses in the back.

I'm telling you, in all honesty, this book is a home run...and an outright bargain for the info, and inspiration it contains. I'd go into the recipes but you should be surprised like I was...key lime pie, man key west is my wife and I's favorite place in the world...and Mike's take on the pie isn't your typical protein pie...kicked up tuna sandwiches (drop that can brother, well now its fancy pouches but ya know what I mean, back in the day we choked down can after can, you can eat tuna in style with this book)...Aussie chicken...man, I'll stop there, gotta leave some adventure for the new buyer, and there's plenty of it in this book.

Do yourself a favor, you deserve it...you deserve a change for the better my friend. Buy this book...and begin enjoying your 'diet' like you never have before.

Food is hard. I just want to put things in my belly. I dont want to worry about complex crap. Give me a simple list, simple instructions, and something I dont have to worry about undercooking killing me.

I'll put that in my belly. This has put many things in my belly. I like.

Worth Every Penny
By Jobarda
This book is a steal, for just shy of $5 you get a book full of over 110 recipes designed to help you meet your goals, get ripped or get big.

The book starts off with a short and sweet but effective rehash of some basic tenets of healthy eating and nutrition. The author provides you with some great baseline nutrition goals to meet based on your desired outcome. Don't skip this section! There's a lot of good info here so take a look before you get started.

Each section of the book is split between heavier meals (more calories, protein, and carbs) to help you gain muscle mass and lighter meals (less of the aforementioned items) to help you keep your calorie intake low if you are working towards weight loss goals. Each recipe is preceded by a breakdown of calories, protein, carbs, and fat so that you can get an idea of what your daily intake is going to look like if you're someone like me who plans their meals out in advance.

Along with providing recipes for all major meals, there are also sections which cover salads, protein shakes/bars, and desserts. The protein bar and shake sections were of particular interest to me due to the fact that in their manufactured form both are kind of pricey and don't really taste all that great to me. Having these recipes to turn to as an alternative is a great way to supplement your protein intake during the day without breaking the bank.

All in all this is a great book and when purchased as a Kindle version is worth far more than the price you'll pay for it. This has become a mainstay for me in order to help keep my weight in control as well as maintain and build lean muscle mass.

Paranormal investigator Zak Bagans has traveled all over the world, seeking answers to life’s deepest and most terrifying mysteries. What happens when we die? Why do some spirits move on while others remain stuck in some sort of in-between place? What do the spirits really want from us? Zak has dedicated his life to finding out the truth.

He has bought a demon house in Indiana that has been described as a “portal to hell,” summoned the devil at the Hellfire Club in Ireland, and been attacked by a possessed doll in Mexico. But sometimes it’s his interactions with the living that rattle him the most, from innocent people harboring evil spirits to crazed fans to the victims of violent spirit attacks.

Through his investigations of the world’s most haunted places, Zak has learned far more about the living and the dead than anyone should. He’s been to the edge of death and back and come away with a spiritual key that unlocks doors to another world that few have ever seen.

Come along for the ride.

He is the author of four books, including Dark World, and over two hundred internet and print articles. Crigger retired from the US Army in 2011 after 24 years in uniform.

Rambling, unorganized, and self-indulgent. Watch him on T.V. instead.
By KJAL
As a frequent purchaser of e-books in this category, I’ve learned to alter my expectations based on price. Authors who price their books at $1.99 (or even $.99) often have an excellent story to tell, but seldom have the assistance of a traditional publisher or professional editor. I’ve learned to cut these authors some slack since they are riding the publishing trapeze without a net of underlying services (and am often pleasantly surprised with the level of quality they’re able to put out).

When I pay much more than that, however, as I did with this book, my expectations go up accordingly. Because Zak utilized both a publisher (who also produced a hardcover version of the book) and an experienced co-author, I bought with confidence that this book would be professionally done. Unfortunately, what I’ve found is a hot mess of poor editorial choices and a near complete lack of organization.

Chapter one, for example, reads like the sort of off-the-cuff soliloquy spoken into a tape recorder while driving in city traffic—and maybe it was. It moves randomly from veiled criticisms of competing shows to complaints about the shallowness of celebrity culture to spiritualist philosophy and back again. If co-author Crigger was doing anything more than transcribing, it isn’t reflected in the resulting chapter. Someone needed to parse this raw material into a framework that provides some flow and transition. A co-author’s job should have been to suggest something like: Part I: Common investigative methods, their flaws & pitfalls. Part II: What we do differently, how we do it better and have improved over time; Part III: The deep spiritual impact this work has brought to my life; Part IV?: Celebrity culture? Just leave out any mentions of the Biebs, Madonna, and the Kardashians—it just dates your material and makes you look petty. Where was Crigger in this? Either he failed to make these basic suggestions, or Zak’s ego was too big to accept good advice. We may never know why, but Chapter one’s extended rambling creates a very poor first impression for the book.

Chapter two was better—almost. This is where Zak pays tribute to his co-workers on his show. It was great to hear his personal insights and his appreciation for those who have contributed so much to the show’s success. The only problem? The glaring omission of one of the three main investigators: Nick Groff. Did I miss a section about Nick? I paged back through the chapter. No, nothing there. I paged back further to the credits at the beginning. Even Zak’s dog is acknowledged, but no mention of his co-investigator Nick. I can think of any number of reasons for Nick's absence—maybe he asked to be left out for privacy reasons, maybe there is behind-the-scenes conflict that we don’t know about, maybe Nick’s publisher insisted he be left out. But nothing is explained—fans are simply left wondering what they missed.

Chapter three starts out strong with new material about an infested house that Zak bought—material that we haven’t seen from the show. Unfortunately, it stops abruptly with a come-on to check back for Zak’s documentary.

And on it goes.

I still love Zak’s show and respect Zak himself, but this book feels like it was rushed out the door with little work invested—it reads like an attempt to monetize popularity rather than provide any value to his fans and readers. My advice: Watch the show, but think carefully before buying this book.

Lacking a little/a lot.
By Kat
I needed a book to fill some time and thought this was going to be an interesting trip into Zak's head. It was a trip into his head but it wasn't particularly deep and not particularly interesting. I guess I feel that there's more going on with this guy but he's still kind of just skimming the surface. The book was basically a collection of oral essays that he had transcribed. I'm all about the stream of consciousness sort of thing if it leads somewhere but this didn't lead anywhere really.

And if he wasn't ready to "go there" in this book and I mean really sincerely go there instead of just skimming the surface then at least it could have interesting stories about the haunted places or something but the book was lacking in that too.

Poor writing undermines some interesting ideas
By Braden Pickering
Before I get too critical here, just let me say that in spite of his sometimes corny “cool dude” image, I do believe that Zak Bagans truly is an intellectual at heart and his passion for the paranormal is to be taken seriously. As a researcher, author, and clairvoyant myself I applaud him for bringing such topics to light and injecting then into an accessible mainstream dialogue. I enjoyed his first book, the thoughtfully written “Dark World,” but wouldn’t be entirely honest if I said I liked this one nearly as much.

For starters, the writing style just feels off in a way I can’t quite put my finger on. He’s a smart guy, as evidenced by some of his prior work, but the writing here is so simplistic in nature it’s as if he were making a point to pander to those with a 3rd grade intellect. “I went upstairs. There were shadows. It was scary.” I don’t want to sound condescending by putting it that way, but the entire book is presented in such a fashion and it’s frustrating to watch people dumb themselves down when you know they’re capable of so much more. (In fact, because of that, I’m tempted to question how much of this book Bagans himself actually had a hand in.) He also takes every opportunity he can to pat himself on the back by reminding us how creative he is and how much more experience he has under his belt compared to most other paranormal investigators. Practically every other paragraph begins with “As an empath…” and that gets tiresome real quick, especially since he never fully explores exactly what that means for him. I don’t fault him for coming off as a tad douchey, mind you, because he HAS accomplished a lot and lord knows I can toot my own horn when I want to as well. But again, it only serves to further highlight just how poor and repetitive the actual writing is.

On the plus side, if you read his last book, which was very philosophical, you might be glad to know that Bagans opens up a bit more about himself and delves into more personal territory this time around. He touches on subjects such as his plastic surgery, ex-girlfriends, fame, and shares a handful of anecdotes about crazy fans and why he likes to shy away from the limelight as much as possible when he isn’t working. I found the chapter about the airplane bathroom mishap particularly amusing because not only was it hilarious anyway, but it was one of the few instances where it felt like his true personality was finally breaking through the walls he spent the previous 200 pages building up around it.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts so take them as you will. Zak seems like a tough guy to get to know, and this book certainly did him no favors in that respect. Though I have criticized the writing style I can’t help but feel perhaps it’s an intentional method of keeping the reader at arm’s length, but then I suppose I would have to wonder why he’d want to publish another book at all if that were the case. It’s hard to say. In any event, if you’re a more casual fan of Bagans or the Ghost Adventures TV show I would cautiously recommend “I am Haunted” as an easy way to kill a weekend, but if you’re more research-minded and are looking for a resource to return to again and again, just stick with “Dark World.”

Worth the wait!
By tgreen
The second book "Fall" was just as entertaining and exciting as the first "Keep". Not knowing what happened to key players at the end was a little disappointing. I love to read and will definitely purchase the third book "Avenge" Dec 21st , when it's released. So far I love this series and will continue supporting this author.

Sweet story.
By Pooh
The love story between Sorin and Esther was tender, touching, and sweetly written. But the author could have lengthened the story by showing greater character development, and showing us more about Sorin's mob life. It was a bit unrealistic that he spent a majority of his time chasing behind Esther. And speaking of Esther, can we get a better description of her besides her breast, thighs, and calves? What style or color hair does she have? Not once is there a mention of Sorin even touching her hair. Anyway, it was a decent read, but needed better development.

A "by the numbers" book that will only hurt your artistic development
By Onikaze
First off, Christopher Hart cannot draw, let alone instruct others on how to draw. Christopher Hart books are generally best avoided, and Drawing Fantastic Furries is no exception. In general, most of your "How to Draw" books focused on a specific cartoon niche are worthless. I'm talking about ones like "How to Draw Fantasy Creatures" or "How to Draw Manga Heroes" or "How to Draw Vampires." Not every "How to Draw" book is bad, but those focused on very specific cartoon niches are frequently bad and simply designed to cash in on whatever cartoon subject or style is popular at the time. They're frequently drawn by people who cannot draw themselves. Again, in this sense Christopher Hart is no exception. If you look through his many books, you'll see that his own drawings are amateurish and plagued with horrid anatomy that would make Rob Liefield look like Leonardo da Vinci. Most of the illustrations that actually appear to be good (until you start to dissect the components such as composition and anatomy) are by other artists.

Another problem is that this book, like many of your current "How to Draw" books, is not well suited for total beginners. You generally get a stick figure for the initial sketching, a roughed out model using the "construction method" (breaking the subject down into fundamental geometric shapes), and then the rest of the illustrative process is skipped to show a finished character. This is all well and good for folks who are familiar with the general process of drawing a subject and know how to build up the anatomy, the clothing, the accessories, and then bring it together into a finished product. But for newbies, these crucial details are generally omitted and do little other than encourage the neophyte to replicate the specific image. So it omits those "magical mystery steps" that are actually useful for fleshing out a drawing. It also provides very little information that is useful for then going on to create your own image.

If you will click the "Look Inside" link above, I'll mention a few things about the images you can see in the preview to illustrate how you are better off avoiding this book. For example, the second image is a tiger warrior. If you'll look at his torso, the area of the diaphragm between the pectoral and abdominal muscles has been "fudged" into part of the abdominal complex. The torso has no depth and the sense of musculature is very poor. Likewise, the shoulders are not well placed on the body. The right arm in particular is almost completely detached. The fox girl on the sixth preview page is poorly posed. The line of her body suggests her weight is evenly distributed and not shifted primarily to her left foot. Yet her right foot only has the tips of the toes touching the ground, suggesting it bears little or no weight. This is simply poor development of the pose and a lack of any real sense of how the body moves both physically and artistically. Further into the preview, there are pages about "Character Consistency at Different Angles." However, the different illustrations are of different characters, clearly avoiding the challenge of actually maintaining consistency of the **same** character at different angles. Look through the preview pages of this book and ask yourself, "Do I really want to limit my artistic development by only learning to draw like this fellow?" Especially when it is evident that he, himself, cannot draw.

If you are looking for good instructional books there are many out there that are more tried and true for aspiring cartoonists. These include:
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way (Despite the "How to Draw" part of the title, this book provides a good look at figure drawing, composition, storytelling, and other very basic artistic elements as they apply to the comic book industry. Though a bit dated, it has stood the test of time for many generations of aspiring comic artists.)
Drawing the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm
Drawing Animals by Jack Hamm
Dynamic Anatomy by Burne Hogarth (Hogarth approaches anatomy more like an architect or mathematician, but the book provides a very solid sense of the human figure as a series of more complex geometric relationships that move beyond the more basic shapes conveyed in many figure drawing books.)

If you are interested in drawing anthropomorphic characters specifically, I would suggest pairing the two books by Jack Hamm mentioned above and grabbing "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" if you can get it as well. By learning to draw both regular humans and animals well, you will equip yourself with the knowledge and skill to combine those subjects into amazing, fanciful furry creatures that will put Christopher Hart's by-the-numbers characters to shame.

And if you want to get a bit more cartoony, "Action! Cartooning" and "Fantasy! Cartooning" by Ben Caldwell are better purchases than Christopher Hart's books. They suffer some of the same writing flaws, but Caldwell is definitely a superior artist compared to Hart.

If you'd really like to give this book a more thorough look I would suggest seeing if your local library has it or thumb through it at a bookstore. It is ultimately up to the buyer and aspiring artist to determine if this book will be of any use to them. However, I would personally advise against buying any of these niche books - especially those by Christopher Hart. Drawing any subject, be it fantastic or mundane, is a process of learning to observe, training the hand to produce what is in the world and in the mind, and practice practice practice. The Christopher Hart books attempt to cash in on those looking for shortcuts and easy fixes to drawing a particular subject or style, but true artists learn to do that by taking the fundamental principles of art and adapting them through observation of another artist's style or crafting their own unique fantasy and sci-fi characters and creatures. Many aspiring "manga/anime" artists don't realize that the true professional creators of the anime and manga they enjoy first learned to draw realistically and learned the basics as any art student would. Then they later took these fundamentals and adapted them into a more stylized approach.

There is no substitute for learning the fundamentals of art and illustration before you begin to focus on particular subjects and styles. No book will provide easy shortcuts that will do anything but hinder your artistic development. In short, no book will replace hard work and practice. Rather than throwing money away on this book, check out the resources at your library, look through books at stores, and look at resources online developed by communities of artists. (For example, Ben Caldwell has a forum where many learning, amateur, and even professional cartoonists share drawings, discussions, and ideas.)

NOT A Book For Furries (or How to Draw Them)
By Preyfar
This is not a book for people who want to learn to draw furries, let alone a book for people who want to learn to draw. It's flawed, and I feel that the author has no idea what furries are, let alone how to properly draw them. More than that, the book has some serious errors. Look at the previews provided by Amazon. Notably, look at the illustration on page 12. The human-hybrid at the bottom of the page stands on plantigrade legs (bi-pedal, straight human-like legs), yet his left leg's tibia is curved at an awkward, bizarre angle. Unless you have scurvy your legs really should not bend like that. The author tried to cover them up with pants, but there would still be a proper line where the leg's form would be, not curved in concave. Go do a search for tibia/legs. They do not bend that way, and you should NOT buy a book wherein such a huge anatomical flaw is present within the first few pages.

I could go into more flaws, but this review would end up 10X as long. Just ask yourself if you want a "how to draw" book by somebody who has glaring anatomical flaws. This will not help you learn, but hinder you.

If you want to draw furries all you really need are two things: solid books on human anatomy (90% of drawing a furry is drawing people) and a good book on drawing animals. Replace a head, add in a tail... bam. Mix and match parts, and experiment. Drawing furries are ridiculously easy. There really is no "trick" to drawing furries, and you'd be better off spending you money on books that focus on anatomy (which is, at its base, one of the most important parts of figure drawing). If you really want to spice things up, look for books on drawing monsters or dragons (I recommend the Dragonart series by Jessica "Neondragon" Peffer here on Amazon). Those are good books with great examples, and they'll you far better.

Drawing furries is fun, but you'd be better off spending your money on other, better resources.

to full animal style furry focused
By Terrell
it has a lot of furries with animal style faces but not many with human style faces & animal features. there is a zebra girl on the back of the book that has the more human style but you probably only see about one or two more actually like her in the book. there is also a lot of furries in the book without guides on how to draw them. not that impressive a book for learning but it is good book for more looney tune style furries or so.

Conscious Capitalism, With a New Preface

As seen on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday

The bestselling book, now with a new preface by the authors

At once a bold defense and reimagining of capitalism and a blueprint for a new system for doing business, Conscious Capitalism is for anyone hoping to build a more cooperative, humane, and positive future.

Whole Foods Market cofounder John Mackey and professor and Conscious Capitalism, Inc. cofounder Raj Sisodia argue that both business and capitalism are inherently good, and they use some of today’s best-known and most successful companies to illustrate their point. From Southwest Airlines, UPS, and Tata to Costco, Panera, Google, the Container Store, and Amazon, today’s organizations are creating value for all stakeholders—including customers, employees, suppliers, investors, society, and the environment.

Read this book and you’ll better understand how four specific tenets—higher purpose, stakeholder integration, conscious leadership, and conscious culture and management—can help build strong businesses, move capitalism closer to its highest potential, and foster a more positive environment for all of us.

From Booklist
Mackey and Sisodia, leaders of the corporation Conscious Capitalism, describe the movement in the context of Mackey’s reflections as cofounder of Whole Foods Market. The term conscious capitalism refers to businesses that serve the interests of all major stakeholders—customers, employees, investors, communities, suppliers, and the environment. Mackey’s realization of conscious capitalism began on Memorial Day 1981, as the fledgling Whole Foods Market was basically wiped out by a flood. Unexpectedly, dozens of customers and neighbors showed up to help; employees worked for free, not knowing if the store would survive; suppliers resupplied on credit; investors stepped up, too, and the Whole Foods Market’s bank loaned it money to restock; the store reopened in 28 days. Following two introductory chapters, part 1 covers purpose; part 2 is about stakeholders; part 3, conscious leadership; and part 4, conscious culture and management. Mackey and Sisodia cite companies such as Southwest Airlines, Google, the Container Store, Whole Foods Market, and Nordstrom as embracing this sound vision of reality. A very solid examination. --Mary Whaley

Doing Well by Doing Good!
By Kevin Currie-Knight
In the October 2005 issue of Reason Magazine, John Mackey, Milton Friedman, and T.J. Rogers debated whether businesses had any larger social responsibility than to maximize profits for shareholders: Mackey was the lone voice for the affirmative. 7+ years later, Conscious Capitalism can best be thought of as an extension and years-later elaboration on Mackey's argument. This book is one part spirited defense of free market capitalism and several parts description of how businesses can and should become more aware of ALL stakeholders (shareholders, workers, customers, distributors, the environment and the community.)

Before going into the how-to's, Mackey starts with a spirited but brief defense of market capitalism. Mackey recounts how he started as a co-founder of a co-op, but left largely because others' political agendas - largely, anti-market - prevented, in Mackey's judgement, the co-op from serving its customers well. Mackey built the store that would come to be Whole Foods and discovered the potential of markets and market transactions to change people's lives. (Lest we forget, markets are less about exploitation and zero-sum thinking than they are about voluntary positive-sum transactions, each party providing what the other wants.) Sadly, when most of us think of market capitalism, we tend to think of Ayn-Rand-like glorification of selfishness and greed as well as economic reductionism (reducing everything to purely economic calculation sans 'the human element.') Needless to say, this is a perception Mackey rightly wants to change.

The rest of the book - the meat and potatoes - are about Mackey's conception of "conscious capitalism" - companies who do well by doing good. Mackey's favorite examples: Google, Amazon, Costco, Southwest Airlines, The Container Store, and (who else?) Whole Foods Market. These are companies who do well by workers, customers, distributors, investors, and other shareholders. They are driven by purpose and vision, create a good culture internally and externally, have good values-focused leadership, and can easily answer the question "What difference would there be in the world if we didn't exist?"

The book examines how these (and other) companies exemplify conscious capitalism's four tenets: (a) have and keep to a strong vision for the company, (b) have value-focused leadership, (c) try as best as you can to take care of all stakeholders (investors, workers, customers, etc) rather than seeing them as antagonistic to each other, (d) create a strong culture internally and externally. Whole Foods, for instance, has a strong mission of bettering people's eating habits. Southwest Airlines has always gone out of its way to create a good and relatively egalitarian work environment. Google cares as much about creating beneficial tools that people can use as it does about increasing profits. Etc.

One of the areas Mackey touches on in the book's appendix, but I wish he'd focus on more - is convincing us that businesses practising conscious capitalism can be successful while doing good things. His appendix cites some good data available elsewhere, but doesn't really go much into that data. (And one has to wonder, if conscious capitalism is a good business strategy, why haven't more folks been 'doing' it a long time ago? After all, markets reward those who are successful. Jack Welch - about whom Mackey has nothing remotely positive to say, with good reason - successfully ran General Electric for many years with his very unconscious capitalism.) Of course, it does make sense that treating stakeholders well is good for business (customers will support those who treat them weil, workers will work harder and stay longer when they are happy, etc.) But I couldn't really see a skeptic being very convinced by this book. (One objection not spoken to: Mackey is clear that conscious capitalism sometimes requires sacrificing short-term gains for long-term gains, but, will one really be able to secure investors, pay distributors fairly, etc, if one is quick to subordinate short-term gains to anticipated long-term gains?)

Anyhow, this book was a pleasure to read. It is refreshing to see an author like Mackey defending the idea that one CAN do well by doing good, one CAN do good things for others and (unapologetically) make a profit. To this reader, at least, this is what capitalism and markets are supposed to be: companies and consumers voluntarily making positive sum transactions producing "mutual gains from trade."

This book should be required reading in all business schools.
By GKD
I found this book to be enormously inspiring. When I finished it, I felt as though I'd had an evangelical experience. It makes you wonder why business hasn't always been conducted in this way. I guess the answer is, because we didn't know any better. We had to evolve to this point, just as we've stopped pouring industrial waste into our rivers and no longer x-ray our feet at the shoe store.

I'm no tree-hugger. I'm not even that much of an environmentalist, but I do recognize a good idea when I read about it. We have a responsibility to our planet and to each other to make this world the best it can be. John Mackey may have amalgamated the ideas of a lot of other people, and he may even have co-opted the term "conscious capitalism" from Muhammad Yunus (I did my homework), but he deserves an enormous amount of credit for what he did do, i.e. put these ideas into practice and then bring them to public consciousness by writing his book.

I didn't know much about Mackey before reading the book, only what was in the news a few years ago about his postings on the Yahoo! message boards. At the time I thought his behavior reprehensible, but given that no charges were filed and that the buyout of Wild Oats was allowed to proceed (and now reflecting on his account of the events), I am inclined to believe that the "news" we were given was incomplete and more than a little tainted by the usual media spin.

In summary, I am completely taken with Mackey's ideas as expressed in his book and can only hope that the world takes notice. I must confess that as I read it I did have a sudden urge to break into a chorus of "Kum Ba Yah" from time to time. It can come across as a bit treacly. But it is a hopeful paradigm for the future of business.

Conscious Capitalism
By William and Melanie Grossman
I would not usually read a book like this. I'm a social worker, not a business person, but I am a Whole Foods fan, and go there just for the boost I get from the positive energy that abounds there. Truth be told, my daughter persuaded me to give the book a chance. I'm glad I did... As someone who has never worked in industry, the book helped me re-examine some of my premises, but did so in a non-judgmental or threatening way. I have dedicated my life to helping others, and this book showed how a conscious business can do the same, not by taking advantage of customers and employees, but by providing them with goods and opportunity they voluntarily wish to exchange time and money for. Not sure I am willing to change my political stripes at this point, but I did enjoy the opportunity to hear a different point of view explained with compassionate concern.

What This Cruel War Was Over: Soldiers, Slavery, and the Civil War, by Chandra Manning

In this unprecedented account, Chandra Manning uses letters, diaries, and regimental newspapers to take the reader inside the minds of Civil War soldiers-black and white, Northern and Southern-as they fought and marched across a divided country. With stunning poise and narrative verve, Manning explores how the Union and Confederate soldiers came to identify slavery as the central issue of the war and what that meant for a tumultuous nation. This is a brilliant and eye-opening debut and an invaluable addition to our understanding of the Civil War as it has never been rendered before.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. For this impressively researched Civil War social history, Georgetown assistant history professor Manning visited more than two dozen states to comb though archives and libraries for primary source material, mostly diaries and letters of men who fought on both sides in the Civil War, along with more than 100 regimental newspapers. The result is an engagingly written, convincingly argued social history with a point—that those who did the fighting in the Union and Confederate armies "plainly identified slavery as the root of the Civil War." Manning backs up her contention with hundreds of first-person testimonies written at the time, rather than often-unreliable after-the-fact memoirs. While most Civil War narratives lean heavily on officers, Easterners and men who fought in Virginia, Manning casts a much broader net. She includes immigrants, African-Americans and western fighters, in order, she says, "to approximate cross sections of the actual Union and Confederate ranks." Based on the author's dissertation, the book is free of academese and appeals to a general audience, though Manning's harsh condemnation of white Southerners' feelings about slavery and her unstinting praise of Union soldiers' "commitment to emancipation" take a step beyond scholarly objectivity. From Booklist
Manning's subject--slavery as the prime cause of the Civil War--is hardly unusual, but what makes this study unique, provocative, and immensely valuable is her approach. She utilizes the letters, diaries, and regimental newspapers, all written during the war, to glean the attitudes, hopes, and even the fears of soldiers toward the institution of slavery and emancipation. Unlike many previous works on the subject, Manning ignores the writings of elites and emphasizes the opinions of common soldiers, North and South, white and black. Some of her conclusions are striking and likely to generate intense debate. Although acknowledging that many Union soldiers enlisted to preserve the Union rather than to fight slavery, she asserts that both slavery and emancipation were constant topics of discussion as early as 1861. She disputes that nonslaveholding Confederate soldiers (who were the overwhelming majority) fought primarily to defend hearth and home from Yankee invaders. Rather, she maintains that the defense of slavery was intimately tied to their sense of manhood, honor, and their place in the Southern social structures. A well-argued examination. Jay Freeman

Review of Kindle Edition: No hyperlinked endnotes.
By Bill
Review of the Kindle Edition. Note, this review is not a commentary on the argument of the book or on writing quality. It is a very important book, and has been a touchstone for debates among historians. I post it as a warning to those who are trying to decide on whether to buy the paper or ebook version. The endnotes in the ebook version are NOT hyper-linked, making it extremely difficult to quickly reference the very valuable notes as you read. There really is no excuse for a book this recent to not include hyper-linked notes, and shame on the publisher for not bothering to take the time to include this feature. For that reason, if you are a reader who needs to read endnotes, you may find it easier to access them in the paper version.

Review #19- Scott Johnston
By Scott Johnston
In Chandra Manning's work, What this Cruel War was Over, Manning utilizes a plethora of personal though of soldiers in the Civil War. This fresh perspective on the war gives new light to the most sought after topic in American history.
In this monograph one will not find an account of historical military, political or social events. However, this does provide what individual soldiers' feelings toward the lack of food and provisions in the Confederacy, or how they dealt with no shoes as the war went on, or even why they felt God was preventing their victory through their own indulgences.
Manning takes on a whole new level of individual social-history which is smartly written and quite through in its own respect. This is a great work to better understand public thought during the war rather than the political thought which ever other historian has already written on. I recommend this in compilation with any other political Civil War monograph to better understand the full picture of the war and era.

How she did her research and what she found
By greg taylor
It is my opinion that this book is the beginning of the end for the claim that the predominant cause of the Civil War wasn't slavery. Slavery was the primary single issue and it was the issue that energized most of the other issues that contributed to the war. Having stated that, I intend simply to summarize how she did her research and some of her conclusions.

Manning's book is the beginning of the end for other causal explanations because she relies on the testimonies that should bear the most weight, i.e., the wartime letters home of the men in blue and gray who fought at Gettysburg, Vicksburg, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Shiloh and all the other horrific battles of the war.
Her research is pretty amazing and should first be assessed by looking at her list of Primary Sources in the back of the book which is organized by state. She traveled to every state that was involved in the Civil War and roamed through 45 local libraries and historical societies. She went through larger collections like those of Military History Institute of the U.S. Army and the Library of Congress. She read published collections of Civil War letters and innumerable state documents relating to the War.
Her focus was on the enlisted man and on letters actually written during the war rather than memoirs that were written in the postwar years. She gathered biographical data of the various correspondents whose letters she collected and noted their place of origin, their occupation, educational attainments, etc. She then selected 477 Confederate soldiers and 657 Union soldiers to focus on because their collected backgrounds were representative of the armies as a whole.
She also uncovered some 100+ regimental papers (largely published by enlisted men) and used them as well. She then organized this body of material by date. Not surprisingly, she found that opinions shifted with the fortunes of the war.
Finally, for any one opinion to be considered dominant, it had to be expressed by at least a three to one ratio (p.11). By the way, all this is explained in the first twenty pages, so any reviewer who claims she used a different research strategy or that she can't back up any of her claims with "facts" hasn't read the book.

Her presentation of what she learned is very well written and easy to follow. She largely organized her presentation around the timeline of the war. She then covers what was being discussed in the letters of the Confederate Army and the Union Army both white and black.
I think she has three hermeneutics that she deploys on the material. First is the vast ornate interplay of slavery and racism within American culture at the time. Manning is very clear about the racist attitudes of many of the Union soldiers throughout the war and is clear about the way the black soldiers were mistreated, especially initially, by the higher command of that Army. But she believes that their letters show that during the course of the War, that enlisted white Union soldiers went through several shifts in their attitudes toward slavery and toward black Americans. Those shifts she sees as largely progressive and in advance of the chain of command and Northern public opinion as a whole. The War radicalized the soldiers. Most of them had never seen Southern slave society at work and they didn't much cotton to it. Their own racism took longer to be impacted. But for many Union soldiers, watching black Americans in battle was a revelation and a catalyst to personal change. There was backsliding during changes in the momentum of the War, there was frustration by the white soldiers at how much they were sacrificing and some of the soldiers left their service as racist as they entered it. But Manning is clear that there was a enormous change in the opinion of the white enlisted man as a whole and in the higher command. At the end of the war, the black Union soldier received equal pay and could become an officer. This was unthinkable four years earlier.

Manning's other two hermeneutics are more controversial and are probably the source of most of the resistance to her reading of the evidence. Manning feels that she can discern differences in the patriotism of the Confederate soldier and that of the Union soldier. It is her claim that the average Southerner regarded government as justifiable only to the extent it served his needs and that of his family. To the extent that that government began to impinge on his paternal control of his own life and his family was to the extent that the Southerner rejected government. By the way, she sees a related dynamic in the ways that the North and the South responded to the Second Great Awakening and its aftermath in antebellum America. That religious movement created organized reform movements in the North that focused on societal issues (among others, abolition). In the South, the emphasis was on the personal reform of the individual.
When the Southern states succeeded, they created a new national government to which the white Southern man had few if any attachments. As the War went on, the Confederate government had to behave in ways that didn't fit in with Southern ideas on government. To that extent, the Confederate soldier felt less loyalty to that government. The difference with the Northern white soldier should be clear. Billy Yank had a history with his government. He regarded that government as part of his larger society that provided services and to which he owed allegiance.
This difference cuts across her third hermeneutic which deals with the nature of Southern versus Northern manhood. Manning feels that for the enlisted white Confederate, slavery created a social structure which gave him the space to express that paternalistic manhood. His service on slave patrols, his ability to discipline slaves who were not respectful and other rights that the poor white non-slaveholding man had compared with a slave gave him a sense of equality with the upper Southern masters. Obviously, this is the most controversial portion of Manning's reading of the Southern men's letters but she uses it to explain a lot.
Another aspect of Manning's version of Southern manhood was rooted in fear and violence. The South had been traumatized by actual and possible slave rebellions. In some parts of the South, the slaves outnumbered the whites. Race war seemed a real possibility if the slaves were ever to be successfully armed and encouraged. The War and the Union Army did just that. The Southern soldier believed that he was fighting for the physical safety of his own family and for his own farm. Manning feels he fought to preserve the world he knew and wherein he had his place.
This reading is how Manning confronts one of the common arguments against slavery being the main cause of the war. The fact is that the vast majority of Southern white men did not own slaves. Why would all these men choose to fight and die over something they had no stake in? Manning's answer is that the Southern man fought for the world he knew and loved and wanted to leave to his children. The Confederate soldier knew that world was built on slave labor.

As I implied earlier, I found Manning's book to be utterly convincing. I would offer one more reason for reading her book. She uses an enormous amount of quotes. I detest the way the way we men talk about violence among ourselves- the fight stories, the "then I said" type stories that are told to maintain whatever it is they maintain. But I find the letters that are written home by American soldiers in war to be a unique and compelling literary genre. They are often poorly spelled and grammar is frequently taken to the woodshed but they are frequently funny and have a bedrock humanity which is enormously appealing. Reading some of Manning's quotes will make you wish you knew the men writing and could converse with them. Just another reason to read this very strong contribution to American history.
