As if I had a crash course about electronic mixing and got a perfect score at the comprehension exam

In the church where I attend service regularly, we recently purchased a mixer- basically to mix sound quality, but no one is well equipped to do the right mixing. In most times, despite the several attempts to create a great sound in the stereo field, we just couldn't get it right. Fortunately, I came across this book and started looking for answers on how I could help solve the issue at hand. It was kind of desperate.
At first, because I literally have no clue about mixing, my assumption was -this is going to be very hard. To my surprise, IT IS NOT HARD AT ALL. Mind you, the writing style is so simple, in just a snap, I was blown away how my mind was switched on a 360 degree and end up saying, I can break a leg on this one.
I would like to quote the author, that mixing is like building a house. You have to start brick by brick and choosing the right element that is important, rather than boosting all levels up to prevent a disaster- is what it's all about.
As if I had a crash course about electronic mixing and got a perfect score at the comprehension exam- that's the feeling I got after reading this. No exaggeration. It was as if, a fishbone was taken off my throat. Finally, I can do something for the church.
And because I highly recommend this book for the people who wanted help like me, here are the things that made this book worth 5 stars= easy to read writing construction, the explanation technique is downright steady and gradually increasing its level- you won't get choked up with information, great pro-tips- quite insightful, and a lot of HOW TO's including how to do complementary EQ'ing, how to dash off bad frequencies and more. There are topics that seem complicated to execute for me such as chain , parallel and other compressions, but I believe this is something that most musicians and mixers could relate- I am a newbie here, so basically although I understand that compression is the secret tool for mixing- I still have a lot to learn to make a kick-ass effects in the future or perhaps take my nook and literally read and do demo immediately after each page to get the feel of it. Oh before I forget- the claps and snares smashing reduction sound is awesome. Too much of the clapper is irritating, so the information I got is divine.

Bringing my music to a new level

I've always had a passion for producing my own, unique music, however I've never went out of my comfort zone. It's just recently that I've been looking to push myself and really improve the quality of the mixes I create. So after some research I decided to get this book as it looked promising. And I definitely wasn't disappointed.

It is obvious that the author knows what they are talking about as a lot of accurate, helpful information is given, as well as the book being very well written. Clear instructions are there to follow so I knew exactly what to do.

I especially enjoyed the chapters on advanced stereo effects and musical side chain compression, which were all explained in a manner I understood. Overall, this guide really helped me learn more about how to improve my music, and after using what I've learned I can really hear the difference. I definitely recommend.

Mixing music is a creative art form. I wanted to learn it madly. But, I am not sure how to begin. When I saw this book in Amazon Kindle Store, I instantly downloaded it. Proceeding chronologically from the first Neolithic "bun bricks" to relatively high-tech contemporary forms, Cambridge University art historian Campbell and documentary photographer Pryce reveal the building blocks of the Coliseum, the Taj Mahal, the Florence Cathedral and the Chrysler Building, as well as more humble abodes. Pryce's photos are stunning, making up the bulk of the 600 illustrations here (570 in color) and miraculously capturing the outlines of each brick, even in such massive structures as the Great Mosque in Isfahan, Iran, or the beautiful Buddhist temples of Pagan in Myanmar. He also documents brickmaking in the Bulmer Brickworks in Suffolk, England, as a worker moulds, "strikes," "drops" and dusts large, ochre, rectangular bricks. The photos, as well as excellent period technical illustrations, are laid out in compelling two-page spreads, each with subheading (e.g., "Petrus Cuypers and the Gothic Revival in Holland") in this 9.75" 12.5" book, and are matched by Campbell's clear and intense historiography. In Sumerian times, he notes, offerings of food and drink were presented to "the brick god," who was "represented in the ritual by the first brick." More recently, mortar for the foundations of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul was mixed with "a broth of barley and bark of elm" and sacred relics, accompanied by prayers, placed between every 12 bricks. A lack of detail on Chinese use of brick, particularly early brickwork, is a drawback, but the Islamic world is well-covered, and Campbell's refreshing focus on the brickmakers (often family-run businesses) and bricklayers themselves shows how techniques were kept secret to prevent early forms of industrial espionage, now posing a challenge to contemporary scholars trying to figure out how bricks were engineered even as late as the Victorian era.

The fired brick was first invented in Neolithic Jericho, then taken up with great alacrity and skill in Mesopotamia and Egypt and by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Moving slowly forward in time, Campbell and Bryce chart the rapid evolution of brick making and bricklaying, explicating such marvels as the Colosseum and the Great Wall of China. Religious ardor in the Middle Ages inspired the construction of incredibly elaborate brick cathedrals, intricately patterned mosques, and such beautiful Asian Buddhist structures as Pagan, Burma, a brick dream consisting of several thousand temples and stupas. All in all it's just another brick in the wall ... NOT! This book is fabulous. I bought it for my dad who has been a bricklayer since he was a teenager. He is fascinated by the history. The photos are also magnificent. A very fine read!

Particularly nice book design and photography

The author writes easily, seems to know everything, and has a completely unpretentious style. He also chose his subjects well, with many less-well-known examples and only a few icons. As a historian, he occasionaly suffers from their tendency to document, say, the names and ruling periods of the Middle Ages Persian kings before getting to the interesting parts about the use of brick in that era. The photographs are all similar to the one on the cover--deep colors and bright sunlight--and their consistency adds a nice touch. The organization of the book was good too, presenting the subject in manageable bites.

This motivates a more detailed description of the weak and strong interactions, of the Standard Model of the microcosm with its experimental tests, and of the Higgs mechanism. The open problems in the Standard Model of the microcosm and macrocosm are presented at the end of the book. For example, the CP violation currently measured does not explain the matter­-antimatter asymmetry of the observable universe; the neutrino oscillations and the estimated amount of cosmological dark matter seem to require new physics beyond the Standard Model. This book aims to provide the basis of theoretical foundation and phenomenological knowledge of the structure of matter at the subatomic level. It starts by presenting the general concepts at the simplest level and does not require previous knowledge of the field, except for the basic quantum mechanics. The readers are gradually introduced to the increasingly more advanced topics, so that this text can accompany students all the way to their graduate and doctoral studies in experimental high-energy physics.
Special emphasis is placed on experimental and phenomenological aspects of the field and how measurements and theory interplay in the development of particle physics. The book is based on the authors’ undergraduate and graduate lecture courses at the University of Bologna, Italy.

About the Author
Giorgio M. Giacomelli became full professor of Physics in 1971. He is (co)author of > 650 publications in scientific journals and over 350 reports and conference proceedings. He supervised 115 Laurea Theses, 30 PhD Theses.  He received prizes from the Italian Physical Society, the University of Bologna and from the A. Della Riccia Foundation. He is “Marchigiano of the year 2006”. In 1981 the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) listed him in the “1000 Contemporary Scientists Most-Cited in 1969-78". He is presently in the Highly Cited list of ISI.
He was Director of the Institute of Physics, of the Department of Physics (1975-88) and President of the Laurea in Physics Committee of the University of Bologna. He was a member of many national and international scientific committees (SPSC, LEPC and ECFA at CERN, HEP at Fermilab, of INFN, of the ENI foundation, of CTS of ENEA, bioethics of CNR, of the Galvani Committee). Presently he is Emeritus Professor at the University of Bologna, collaborator of INFN and CERN, Fellow of the American Physical Society, Socio Benemerito of the Italian Physical Society, member of the European Physical Society, of the Accademia delle Scienze di Bologna, of the New York Academy of Sciences, and the Accademia Teatina. He is one of the Editors of the Journal “Astroparticle Physics”.

Excellent primer - looking forward to an expanded 2nd edition

Excellent for putting most of particle physics together. But relativity and quantum physics are not included in particle physics presented. So I am not sure of the completeness of the material. Instantaneous properties, gravity, source of fringe patterns ... are not related to the fundamental interactions so there definitely room for another edition to be written.

An under read classic.

Within the first few pages, it becomes apparent quickly that Manhattan Transfer is not a traditional novel. Dos Passos presents a collage of New York City in the 1920's that even 75 years later describes well the modern city. His technique of jumping from character to character as they interact with each other within the city as some succeed and others fail provides a bleak, yet at the same time oddly wonderful reading. His injection of newspaper ads, songs, and advertisements captures so well the bustle of large cities. I can only wonder why he is often left out of the "canon" of American Modernists. It does take adjustment to read Manhattan Transfer, but you will be more than rewarded for your efforts.

This book helped create "Modernism" in literature...but it's also a good read
By Reading as Much as I Can
This book is an excellent read, but it does highlight some of the problems with the early phase of so-called "Modern" writing. Passos is trying hard (perhaps too hard) to describe everything going on around him over a period of several years. That's a hefty task for a novelist and no one has done it much better (except Leo Tolstoi).

Unlike Tolstoi, though, John Dos Passos never gets very far into the minds and motivations of his characters. Like Tolstoi, he has a cast of hundreds, but he is not as deft at giving even some of the recurring characters the realistic motivations and sympathetic treatment that Tolstoi does. One does want to like or feel something for *some* of the characters in a novel. Maybe we want to dislike or even hate an occasional character. It's probably part of Passos's scheme to have none of that sort of thing in Manhattan, but he does early on introduce the rather sympathetic character of Ed. Red herring, really. Ed will disappear into Manhattan, his concerns and doings of only tangential importance within another 100 pages. I'm sure that literary critics have created an industry of trying to connect Ellen/Elaine's doings up with Ed's, somehow, but really, Ed is just an average guy with an average baby in an average setting in early 20th century Manhattan.

Upon rereading some of it, I get the feeling that Passos did not know where most of his characters were going or whether they would turn up again in the book. It seems as if he knew he needed some of them to recur, to make it a novel rather than a very extended book of vignettes and sketches. He does sketches very well. Most of us would be delighted to find ourselves able to write such sketches, but, like John Dos Passos, even if we could, we would not find a publisher. We could blog our sketches, and it struck me that Passos is something like an early blogger. Lots of impressionistic, day-to-day observations, strung together mostly by the fact that one person is writing them down. The sudden development of dramatic plot lines (and their very rapid denouements) means that you can't just start reading near the back and "get" the story (unlike a blog), but that's one of the few things that makes it different from blogging.

We have lots of great observers out there in the cyberworld, observing and writing. John Dos Passos took a chance when he decided to make a living making these kinds of observations. We are indebted to him, forever, for these glimpses of the World's Second Metropolis and for those glimpses, alone, this book is more than worthwhile. Whether you love Manhattan, as I do, or you hate it, you will still enjoy much of this book. You'll also likely find yourself wanting to skim certain sections, just as you'd wish the person in the next cubicle would stop some irritating habit, you'll find some of the characters irritating. They are, however, quite real in their ability to irritate and that's something to accomplish. He's far deeper into personalities, personality types and dialects than, say, Hemingway.

This book also set up many decades of further fictions about New York City, so in that regard, it's also a must read.

Lots of energy but fades into history like the buggy whip

Ask anyone about the 1920's and they may think Jazz Age, Prohibition, Babe Ruth, Hemingway, Fitzgerald maybe Faulkner. Only a minority would throw John Dos Passos into that ring but he was in fact a giant of the time. His "USA Trilogy" and "Manhattan Transfer" were recognized and awarded the same acclaim as writers we know so much better today.

Hemingway wrote that "Manhattan Transfer" finally gave the world the real picture of New York City. Alfred Döblin was deeply influenced by Dos Passos's style. He ran with the same crowd. Drank and partied with them all and yet almost a hundred years later his own fame is far eclipsed by so many others. Why?

A great novel needs great characters and a central theme or conflict. Dos Passos was writing about a time and place; New York City in the first part of the 20 century. His focus is on atmosphere. He wants you to feel the city through it's accents, bustle, the frustrations of daily life, the food and drink and the movement of cars, taxis, subways, street cars and boats of every kind. Through all that he wants to convey the energy that's bursting in every direction but he also wants to expose the contradictions of daily life; war veterans not getting their bonuses, women yearning for more opportunity, backstreet abortions, failed marriages, banks and businesses and later drinking during prohibition.

Characters come in go very briefly, re-appearing later. There are so many that it takes perhaps the first half of the book to keep it straight. For me it was hard to follow let alone develop an empathy or curiosity for them. It felt very flat. He uses major events of the day as a timeline but aside from war and prohibition much of those references are obscure and thus one tends to lose a sense of time passing that he was likely successfully conveying to his contemporaries.

My conclusion is that it's too ambitious and there is too little for the modern reader to grasp. By doing so much there are interesting points and poignant scenes. But too often I was flipping back to see if I had already jumped to yet another vignette and double checking if he'd jumped a few weeks, months or years. Pulling this out of a time capsule I enjoyed this as a 1925 novel of early New York but I wonder if it were the book that I'd want to say best depicted New York at that time and I'd conclude that other works have surpassed it.

About the Author
David Kelley received his Ph.D. from Princeton University and his M.A. and B.A. from Brown University. The Art of Reasoning grew out of his extensive experience teaching logic at Vassar College and Brandeis University. In 1990, he founded the Institute for Objectivist Studies in Poughkeepsie, New York, and currently serves as its executive director. He is the author of Evidence of the Senses, as well as numerous articles published in professional journals and in periodicals such as Harper’s, Barron’s, and the Wall Street Journal.

Superb Critical Thinking Text

This is an excellent introduction to non-symbolic logic, with interesting and intelligent exercises for students. Kelley's textbook is well-organized and lucidly written. It's one of the very best books on critical thinking.
And contrary to what a previous reviewer has said, Kelley's personal Randian philosophy does not intrude on his pedagogy. He chooses his examples from all across the political spectrum and makes a strenuous effort to be fair and impartial in his analyses. What more can one ask of a philosopher?
